Well he must have smelled or heard something he didn't like. Stayed just far enough away from the light to keep from gaining some arrow shaped jewelry.

Thermal is the answer!

I've noticed more and more used thermals on the market in the last year or so. Once you try one you'll wonder why you didn't try it a long time ago. NOTHING can hide from the thermal.

(Just avoid ATN even though they offer low-end stuff at "bargain" prices)

That may be a little too absolute. It is amazing what you can't find with thermal and what can look like a target on thermal that isn't. Thermal can't even see through glass or a decent plastic bag. So things really can hide from thermal, but with that said, thermal offers many advantages over NV or light shine, but with certain shortcomings as well.
