My pig barrel out at the swamp as been good to me this month on boars. First a 222, then a 216, and now a 314 lb old warrior.

Been Watching this guy on camera but he has been spooky and kind of random. But he showed up early on Friday night so I rolled on him with a solo stalk. This barrel is only 10-12 minutes from my house so I can get there quick. Snuck in to 50 yards on him and went for the double tap with the 300 HAM'R (125 TNT's). Whiffed the second round right over his neck but it didn't matter. He went down hard from the first one. I went ahead and paid the insurance on him with a spine shot though just because big boars like him can be unpredictable sometimes. Anyways, best one I have killed in several years. Big deep scars all over him, ear totally split. Just a straight up big old fighter. I love killing boars like him and wanted to show him off.

Very well done. up When you have time, could you explain how your "pig barrel" is rigged and is there a special mix in it or just plain corn? Thanx.

Pig barrel is pretty simple. That is a 20 gal poly barrel, kind of like the 30 gal chemical barrels just a bit smaller. Perfect size. I get the from the local car wash guy, soap comes in them. I put an eye bolt in the bottom of it with a big washer on the inside, double nuts and loctite. Barrel has 8 holes in it with a 9/16 or 5/8 bit depending on how fast you want the corn to come out. They are spaced evenly around the barrel, 90 degree intervals. About 5 or 6 feet of chain with good swivels on each end. That is very important. If a pig can get something twisted up they will break it. T post in the center for it to pivot around. I usually put a piece of pipe over that as well or make an attachment ring that has plenty of ability to swing around the post without binding. Don't put the post in the ground too deep or they can lift the chain off the post and roll the barrel away. I'll try and post up some good pics later.

EDIT to add, just plain corn in the barrel. Other things can get it really nasty and clog the holes if it rains too much. The trick is to get them to learn to roll the barrel if they don't know what it is. To do that sometimes I will put some soured corn down (not in the barrel) just to get them moving and pushing the barrel around. Once they learn though they will roll that thing for hours at a time. I let them get used to it at first and don't shoot any pigs for several weeks. Let them all get trained up on where the barrel is and how to roll it.

That's a big boy. Haven't seen one like that in quite a while.

Did he still have his nads?

Yes he did. They weren’t real big ones compared to some I’ve seen, but he had them.

Thanks for all the comments guys, I appreciate it!

That barrel has sure been a producer the last 4-6 weeks. First killed a 221, then a 216, then big boy here at 314. Last night his replacement showed up. Another good one, I'm guessing he is at least as big as the first 2, maybe better. Not in the class with this last one though. Going to have to try and get my daughter on him. It has been a while since she has killed a good one.

Hudbone, I barely got it in there. I was by myself and it tested my hoist to the max. Honestly I did not know if he was going to break something before I got him in there or not. The hoist flexed really hard and I think it has a little permanent bend in it now. But I got him loaded.

If you grab a pig by the hind legs my hoist will barely get a 250 lb boars nose off the ground. Any bigger than that I have to grab a front leg and opposite back leg. Makes a horrible picture slung like that but gets them up a lot higher and gives a true weight. Last summer me and my partner shot a 285 lb boar and picked him up by the hind legs. We had to dig out under his nose for him to swing free and get a true weight there.

I dug back through some of my pictures trying to find a couple that kind of show my hoist and how it works. Not great pics for showing off the hoist but maybe it will give you an idea how I get my pigs loaded. First pic I don't remember what that one weighed, maybe 190. Second pic that one was 246, just for reference.
