Electric has been out now going into the second full day - and since we are on a well we also have no water - around 1,000 homes near Georgetown - Oncor is absolutely a joke. Guess I will have to cough up the cash for a generator -

I have been going through the same stuff but from a co-op. They wouldn’t trim the trees on my ranch away from the power lines. I certainly wasn’t going to do it around power lines. The legislation passed the power line safety act last session and they were forced to run it underground because of my proximity to lake Whitney. Zero issues since.

Guess I will have to cough up the cash for a generator - I was raised deep in the woods, then on a ranch. I cannot imagine not owning a generator. Currently, my "big" generator is a simple little 5,000 watt gasoline generator with the 240v output back fed through my main panel. Not a very elegant approach compared to a 24kW whole house, but it is a low cost way to keep us up and running except for A/C. I will be adding a soft-start kit for the A/C system so that I can run it on the generator. We lost power Thursday night when the cold front arrived and got it back 12 hours later. We burned about 6 gallons of gas.

Oncor is a miserable power company. And then mother nature can be a real butt kicker. The two together make the need for a generator a must.

Is Oncor what TU became, after Texas Electric Service and Texas Power and Light? From a vendor standpoint, they were always odd.

Tlk, hope you get some reliable juice soon. When I finally hang up these boots and we retire and build, we'll have an integrated whole-house unit with enough power to run the HVAC in any season, and fired by propane.

Luminant merged with Dynegy after both came out of bankruptcy. both were in bankruptcy and after coming out of bankruptcy they formed a company called Vistra. They own all of the old TXU plants plus the old Dynegy plants

Better sooner than later. I got a small 5000/6500w generator a couple years ago for about $750, saw same one couple days ago in store for about $1100.

Get u a whole home generator. Mine runs on propane and is the ticket. It was a little pricey but in the long run it’s worth it for me. I’m out in the country and sometimes power goes out of bright sunny days much less bad weather.

The legislation passed the power line safety act last session and they were forced to run it underground because of my proximity to lake Whitney. Zero issues since. I have trees growing under, threw and over the lines at the back of my property. Oncor can't get to them with their bucket trucks because of the creeks. I installed at 24kw generator with a 1000gal buried propane tank. I also had both hvac's replaced with high efficiency, dc variable drive heat pumps with propane aux heat.

We lost power for 14 hours last week, the night that the cold front hit. And we were down again yesterday 1:30 AM for another 10 hours.
Yes, Oncor We are on a little peninsula with only 66 homes and many/most are weekenders, so I don't think that we are a high priority for Oncor.
A whole house propane/natural gas powered Generac is obviously a really great way to go for outages. That is why so many people go that way. I do not have propane or natural gas. My portable generator back feeds my main panel with a cable and plug so, with all of the lights on, loads like my microwave, toaster oven, coffee maker, water heater, washer/dryer, and stove have to take turns. To me, that is reasonable living during a power outage.
From experience, I burn around 8-12 gallons of gas per day if running continuously. During a longer term emergency, I can cut that in half and still support my two refrigerators and two chest freezers and other basic needs. Between my shed, shop, and boathouse, I keep a good amount of gas on hand. We were down without power for almost 5 days during the big freeze, we were fine on gas.
I suspect that during a longer term grid down situation, will it be easier to find a 5-gallon can of gas than a propane delivery?
