Global pandemic. Universal lockdowns. Toilet paper shortages. Running out of meat. Coins growing scarcer. Soaring gas prices.

Americans have gotten used to a lot of scary headlines over the last two-plus years. The latest is a story circulating on social media that the country has about 25 days supply of diesel fuel left.

The average price of a gallon of diesel fuel in Alabama currently is $4.99, according to AAA Alabama. That’s more than 30 cents higher than a month ago, and 65 cents less than the all-time high set back in mid-June.

The doom-laden deadline of 25 days, however, stems from a report last month from the U.S. Energy Information Administration, which estimated the country had 25.9 days’ worth of diesel fuel on hand. However, that number doesn’t mean what you may think it does.

According to Verify, that metric measures the supply in the U.S. if refineries stopped producing oil, and if the U.S. stopped importing it from other countries. Neither of those scenarios seem likely.

Eliminate the de-sulfurization need and I bet Diesel goes back down to $1.00 gallon

At the very least EPA should step a side and mandate a couple more de-sulfurization plants be built

Talking to a large scale Iowa farmer yesterday. He said his diesel distributor is not concerned with a shortage for next year season at all.

Won’t be a shortage but will continue to be at mercy of the Feds and de-sulfarization plants.

With that said our refinery capacity has steadily dropped since 2020. EPA sure better at closing then opening

Refinery capacity especially de-sulfurization is the single largest bottle neck for diesel

All production and refinery issues all have EPA’s and current administration’s name all over them

No different then real power plant expansion in Texas for grid.

That is a hard question to answer, only around 20% of a barrel of oil is diesel feedstock. A refinery cannot increase or decrease diesel production at will, it is all based on incoming crude. Desuflurization is a different animal since it was an added process to old refineries when the epa mandated it. Every refinery I worked in had a desulfurization unit which seemed to be sketchy hammer fitted equipment. This is not equipment that can just be replaced or increased in capacity and now with more stringent sulfur reduction laws the bottleneck is apparent and the price goes up for you and me.

I'm aware if all of that. The article says that refineries produce oil. Credibility lost.

One thing worth mention is that Heating Oil demand on the East Coast has to be factored in. Heating Oil is a No. 2 Fuel, but without the Cetane number that Diesel requires. That Heating Oil demand will rise with cold weather, but is probably already planned for…probably…

I called the supplier mid week last week to have 300 gal. Delivered. Brought it right out and believe it or not it was cheaper per gallon to have on road diesel delivered than it was at the Loves truck stop today in three rivers.

In our RV travels in the last 60 days or so, the highest price diesel was always at Loves. And not just a little higher either. Way higher. Pilot was almost as bad. Best price was usually QT

I have noticed that truck stops are always higher then regular gas stations these day. Until I retired last year I watched diesel prices for 10 years. As finance manager for the logistics department in a company that spends $200m+ on freight annually I had to track prices and try to forecast and plan for fuel surcharges. I don't recall ever seeing discrepancies this large between truck stops and other sellers.

Food plants are supposed to be burned down by now. Think they quit?
