Lynn Burkhead — Texas quail hunters singing the blues as season begins

It’s a season of singing the blues for quail hunters in Texas, in more ways than one, I might add.

For starters, the recent dismal run of poor quail hatches — thanks to the recent run of precipitation free days and scorched earth quail habitat — looks to continue once again this fall and winter in the Lone Star State according to the recent season outlook issued by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

Put simply, unless your family owns a big ranch in South Texas, or you’ve discovered a golden ticket for an invite to the upland bird hunting version of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory, it’s going to be a rough year for quail hunting, no matter how good the nose is on your bird dog.

Why is that? Rain, or the lack thereof, particularly at the most necessary time of year.

[censored] preserve hunting. I’m selling my dogs.I went 10 years without a dog. I got back into it in2015. Was a great run. I’ll wait again. South Tx is too far for a working man.
