RPQRF e-Quail Newsletter (October 2022 V14N10)

Last month we conducted our annual roadside counts at RPQRR. The survey consists of 4 observers counting all quail seen along a 19.2 mile transect. The transect is broken into 2 routes, where one is conducted in the morning and the other in the evening (and then flipped) and replicated 8 times. Data from this year’s surveys indicate similar abundance to the last 4 years and below the long-term average. Roadside surveys at RPQRR tend to be highly correlated to surveys conducted at the regional scale by Texas Parks and Wildlife Department indicating low abundance across the Rolling Plains during the upcoming hunting season (see figure).
