I needed a new project to work on when it is too hot outside. Just about all I need to do on the truck has been done. So I got this 1967 Mustang. Was started by a couple of different folks but never finished, New chrome bumpers. New 5 speed Tremec transmission. New radiator and electric fan. New back leaf springs and shackles. New front suspension and springs. New shocks. New wheels and tires. New Edelbrock intake manifold and new Holley 650 CFM double pumper carburetor. New front grill. New trunk lid. A lot of new chrome trim pieces. No major rust just some surface rust.
And the Wife didn't get mad about me buying it. Amazing

This one is going to be more fun to watch than the truck...and that one didn't disappoint. Congrats on the new project, Don.

Awesome, can't wait to see what you do with this one. My first car was a '66 Mustang. I hit a wild pig coming home from work one night and pretty much totaled it. Ever since I've grown up and got my own money I've wanted to do another one. I kinda got screwed out of a '65 fast back, still can't believe it happened. Anyway, I've always wanted to do a classic mustang with my son and give it to him when we're done for his 16th BDay.

I doubt that very seriously. If you are right, there will be no THF or anything else but the nuclear winter.

Nice. I'm in the same position. I finished the 1962 MGA, then the 1970 Land Cruiser. I'm thinking I need another sports car or hot rod!!

Oh my heart!

I've been wanting one of these to fix up for about 30 years, and never have done so.

Really looking forward to this project! Keep us posted.

I am hugely impressed that you have the skills to restore the car.

I always wanted a Mustang, but was too poor.

My first car was a 67 Mustang. Is that a 5.0 roller motor? Just curious since it’s a T5. That would have been a 289 originally. The 302 started in 68. I’ll be checking back here often. Looking forward to it.

Your wife wasn't upset when you brought home the mustang because they're chick cars. She probably thinks you're going to restore it for her. Just a thought....

Just saw the above post and was about to ask if it was a '67, then scrolled to the top. So proud of myself. I got Dad's '68 (289) that he traded for but sold it when I fell in love with the love of my life. I've finally realized that I don't have it in me to restore/keep up old cars, after many frustrating experiences. Dad had a '15 Dodge, a '26 Chevy, a '28 Chrysler (with a rumble seat, but he never got around to restoring it), a pristine '67 Bronco, and the '68 Mustang. I've always thought the '67 Fastback Mustang was one of the most beautiful cars ever made. I admire you greatly sir. up

That’s gonna be awesome! I’ve got a 66 in my driveway with the inline 6 I’ve gotta get the fuel system cleaned up and painted. I’ve got my eye on a 68 on base, haven’t seen it move in weeks. Looking forward to the progress.

Installed new Export Brace. Put the New Holley 650 double pumper on. New power brake booster and master cylinder. Still got to mount proportioning valve and redo brake line plumbing. This is the red I am going to paint it someday.

Coming along and looking good. That 650 DP on that small 302 may be tricky to tune. I’d lean more towards something in the 500-580 range.

The carb came with the car and had never been installed like a lot of the parts. The engine I found out after trying to time it using 289-302 timing order is actually a 302 HO. It has a 351 Windsor camshaft, so it uses the 351-timing order. So, we shall see how it works out. I got the timing worked out but still need to fine tune it. Have started it and run it for a couple of minutes each time. Do not have cooling system all hooked up yet so have not run it for an extended time. The car was originally bought from a person that lives in Arizona. The buyer then seems to have bought a lot of new parts but never actually installed them or changed the title. He then died and it was sold to another individual. He also bought new parts and installed some but not all before also dying and not putting the title in his name. It was then sold to the person I got it from. He also bought a few parts and then realized it was too much a project for him. He also never got the title in is name. So for over 20 years the car has been worked on but never been titled or been on the road. I have added up over $10,000 in new parts at the old prices from receipts I got with the car. I have got in touch with the original owner of the car. I have the original title, but the first person that bought it signed the back. I have sent the paperwork to the person in Arizona to sigh and get notarized for me to get the title in my name. He says he will, but we shall see. Otherwise I will have to go the bonded title route. Been interesting to say the least. I had the same problem with the truck I just finished. It all worked out in the end. Working with the local taxing office is interesting. Kind of like when you go there or what day it is or who you talk too is how things go.

What a great find with a lot of unusual circumstances involved. Do keep us posted on the progress you make.

Do you still have the Ford truck you rebuilt?

Yes, still have it. Have put over 700 miles on it so far. Drives really good. Has plenty of power, handles very good on the road and best of all it starts every time.

I sold the 650 Holley DP and got a 600 Holley Brawler. It could not handle the 650 DP. Starts easy now but I still don't have the belt on the front. They had installed a serpentine belt instead of the original V belt. I am changing out the alternator for a single wire one. The wiring is a mess and I am going to have to probably put in a new harness. I had the belt on for a few minutes. The power steering is a mees with a lot of leaks. I am doing away with it and going to manual steering. Took out the windshield and back window. Will need them out to install new headliner and be better to have them out to paint eventually. Spending some money on it but from what I see advertised they bring from $30 to $35K. So I have a long way to go before I have that much in it. Got the signed and notarized paperwork back from the original owner in Arizona so Monday we shall see how it goes for the title transfer.

Finally got the title mess straightened out. Should get the title in my name sent to me in a couple of weeks. What a goat rope that has been. It was amazing to have been able to find the original owner that lives in Arizona and has moved to a different city. Then to be able to get him to take some paperwork to get signed and notarized and sent back to me. Still some very good people in the world.

Got the title in my name. Motor runs well. Got the hydraulic clutch working. Have the rear end jacked up and ran the transmission through all the gears. Brakes seem to be good. Had to bleed them again. There is an electric fuel pump and a mechanical one. Why I did not know. I removed the electrical one. The mechanical would not pump. Took it out and it would not pump on the bench. Was kind of strange that when I removed it there was no resistance when I unbolted it. Took a mirror and looked in the hole. There was no eccentric to make the lever move. It had been a fuel injected engine when new. Somewhere along the line someone removed the FE and put a carb in its place. They then put a mechanical fuel pump. A FE engine has a oil slinger on the timing gear instead of an eccentric and it broke the oil slinger. They should have removed the oil slinger and installed a 2 piece eccentric. No wonder three individuals have owned it for over 20 years and never had it [Linked Image]

Good on you Don!

Been watching "Powerblock" on YouTube a bit the last week. The engine building guys specifically. I have learned a ton more by paying attention and listening to them. They have got me convinced that to know for sure all the ins and outs of an old engine is to just pull it, put it on the stand, and tear it down. See what you see, and go from there.

Lots of wannabe mechanics out there, and you are not one of them. Kudos to you for saving this piece of Americana.

Very awesome! Love seeing old cars/trucks come back to life. Really wish I had the money to do one with my son and give it to him on his 16th birthday. Depending on how it turns out I might keep it and give him my vehicle rofl.

Prices have just gotten out of hand on these cars. Once you replace and upgrade everything I’d probably be way over good used vehicle prices.

I miss my ‘67 Bronco. It had a fiberglass top that broke apart one day. I put a $1500 soft top on and it was stolen a few weeks later so I put a piece of Diamond plate aluminum over the front seats and rolled it that way.

Had to completely redo the fuel system. Cleaned out the aux tank, Bought a new main tank. Fabricated new fuel lines. Brakes were shot. New wheel cylinders, master cylinder, shoes and all new lines. Was missing the starter, carburetor, fuel pump and distributor. Replaced all of those. Hooked up a drill to the oil pump and spun it until I got oil to the rockers. Poured a little gas in the carb and it started. Yesterday I drove it about a mile. Not bad for having sit out in a pasture for 25 years and not run or started. Now for the body work and painting. When I get bored with this I will jump back on the Mustang and finish the wiring. Hope all is well with everyone. Donald

Looks like a good tub, no rot showing in the rockers or door jams looking at the pics. When you change the body mounts, you might as well do the floor pans while you’re at it. What’s the end game, flippin it?

The seat looks a little uncomfortable.

The only floor pan that has some rot is the passenger's side. The rest just have some surface rust. Not going to flip it. Give it to my son when I am gone. The first-generation Broncos are bringing crazy money now. OH, and I bought some like new seats and a few other interior pieces from a guy in Corpus that was changing the interior color of his Bronco.

I’m finally not upside down in my first restoration. Much easier working on them with body off the frame. Just add some bracing, I removed mine alone with an engine hoist. Body mount bolt removal is time consuming.

Who knows where my dad's pristine '67 is. Somewhere between Fredericksburg and Portland (OR). My brother got it and there were lots of vultures wanting to "help" his widow right after his funeral. 'Not my problem. Some people get all worked up over material things. I try very hard not to. bang

Won't lose it out in the pasture and won't have to worry about somebody shooting it. Still have the grill, top, tailgate and doors to paint. Installed a new windshield. So far so good.

Dang Don, that looks super! My brother asked if it was for sale?

Any photos of the Mustang after full restoration?

Biscuit. I did everything myself. It is not perfect, but I like it. Western. I quit working on the Mustang when I picked the Bronco up. I will start back on it when I get finished with this. The Bronco is not for sale but the 1958 Ford F100 I did a while back is. I need to downsize and the truck needs to go. [Linked Image]

Sold the 1958 Ford truck. Started working on the Jeep. New oil pump, fuel pump, carburetor, rubber fuel lines, replaced the rear main oil seal, new ECM and removed most of the emissions crap. Had a plastic valve cover that was warped and looked to have been leaking for quite a while. Got an aluminum one and now no leaks. New tires and cleaned it up. Adjusted the timing and carburetor. Starts good, idles good and drives very good. And also does not look too bad. From that to this. [Linked Image]
