next week for a change of scenery. Been there many times but wondering besides the casino's if I am missing somethings to do. So if you have been there are there any off the beaten track things to do that I may have missed?

We were there earlier in the Summer.
Ruidoso has been hit pretty hard by the loss of labor. Many restaurants have closed, the ones remaining that are decent are packed. Maintenance issues are everywhere.
I always enjoyed the area but I doubt I will return.

Taos was much better and Santa Fe seemed to be doing well.

been to ruidoso once. I just learned to walk and wore my grandpa out going up and down a flight of stairs.
or so I've been told because I sure don't remember it.

I was there just this last weekend, I got the last hotel room as there was a motorcycle rally. You might want to go ahead and book a place. I think going during the week would be better, but then some shops are closed.
I agree with reeltexan about the labor issue. Some restaurants have limited hours and almost all have a "help wanted" sign. I like Jorge's but they were closed, not certain as to why.
In town there isn't much to do except shopping. It is basically a Fredericksburg on steroids. But I think the shops are better.
I have never understood the town as a tourist attraction I go because my daughter lives there. The weather is awesome this time of year, I hang out on the porch and get to see the granddaughter.
There is a lot of wildlife right in town. Whitetail, Mulies and elk are all over. We went to a school there that the wild horses would come to in the evenings. We fed them apples, they can get get really aggressive so we put the granddaughter back in the car right away.

Monahans in the Mountains is what we call it out here…. I always have fun, though. Go to Anaheim Jacks. It’s a good burger and a cold beer.

The labor shortage Santa Fe in August was really bad. I could go into great detail, but our hotel was dirty, restaurants/spa closed, few of the amenities that we paid for available, and the staff that was on hand were not accommodating for the amount we paid for a supposed 4-star hotel. Restaurants in town had really long waits to get in and get food and had limited hours. Even some gas stations were closed in the afternoon. All that said, I would take Santa Fe over Ruidoso.

Plan on doing some fly fishing now that my sling is off. Have a couple of semi-secret places that always produce. Will also look for some bulls at a place or two I know of. Also plan on bringing back a load of firewood.

On 2nd thought, think it was Silver City, not Silverton, CO. LOL

Huh! News to me and i have been here 50 plus years. They should call in Texas of the mountains...if it wasn't for Texans the town might not exist. I enjoy going up there, last time up there I spent way too much time in Texas Brewing! Altitude and beer whipped my a$$ next day!

Pretty sure you can get an Allsups burrito in Fort Sumner. And if I remember correctly, there’s a small cafe on the main drag that makes an excellent hamburger.

Lived in Alamogordo for 8 years....haunted Cloudcroft and Ruidoso many times each year I was there. Loved camping and hiking the areas. We camped for years [before living out there] in the Upper Canyon near the Rock House. Probably went there 15 times with Mom and Dad. Thought we were going to move there at one time, but we wound up in Alamogordo instead.

If you get a chance to fish there, behind the Chamber of Commerce is one of the honey holes. Alto Lake is awesome as well. Have fun!

Just got back a couple of weeks ago and did notice some changes. We go for the gambling so most of our time is spent at the Inn of the Mountain God's, I play poker and blackjack and the wife plays blackjack. We eat at the Inn 90% of the time but did go over to K-Bobs this last time and had a pretty good meal. One of the changes I didn't like was the closing of the Gathering of Nations buffet, they had good food and it was quick and easy. If a person is interested in Lincoln County history a run over to Lincoln is well worth the trip.

Yessir, the history of that county is very interesting and we spent a lot of time exploring it all. Last time I was in the state was 1981. The Wild Snail in downtown Ruidoso was always a fun destination for an interesting meal.

Spent 6 months working there in ‘83. Called it Ruidoso, Texas. More Texas license plates than New Mexico plates. Could even buy Lone Star beer at a drive through liquor store on the main drag.
