I have a Remington 700 short action and I have narrowed cartridge choice down to a 8 twist 22-250 or a 9 twist 6MM Remington. I would just go ahead and do the 6MM but bullet availability right now sucks for the 6's. I have a huge number of .224 bullets already in my possession. either would be purposely built for coyote hunting so I really don't need the fast twist but I want it anyway. Would the 8 twist be too hard on bullets like the 50 grain Varmageddon?

I’d do a 8 in a 6mm over a 9 twist
Fast twist 22-250 is pretty salty, your gonna save a little powder loading the 22-250 over the 6rem

If you got a pile of bullets I wouldn’t think twice about going 22

Love my 22-250. It’s an 8 twist Tikka. I shoot 77 SMKs out of it. I am making the switch to 65 SGKs because I don’t like the 77s on game at all. Haven’t shot any smaller bullets out of mine so can’t speak to that. But I also didn’t buy an 8 twist to shoot 50 grain bullets out of either.

I wouldn’t build a 1/8 twist22-250 with a plan to shoot lighter weight bullets. If just shooting coyotes for casual hunting definitely go 22-250 maybe consider 1/9 which can handle up to 77gr Bullets and be fine for 50’s as well.
For Contest Hunting the 243 with 87gr would be bad medicine.

I have shot a lot of 50-60 gr bullets from 1/8 twist but it was .223 but I am thinking you might get splash wounds from much higher velocity.

I have a sweet spot in my heart for 22-250 as it was the first caliber I used to really stretch out past 100yd shooting so I say go for it. I too one day would like another 22-250, mostly just for the heck of it and I got alot of brass sitting around somewhere.

As for the twist, I'd imagine the whole point of getting a fast twist is to shoot a heavier bullet but more specifically to maximize the accuracy potential by matching the twist to an intended bullet.

My first barrel was a 1:14 twist. 55 gr SGKs at 3780 fps

My second barrel is a 1:8 twist, 75 gr A-Max at 3200 fps

The 75's hit harder, fly farther, and wind drift less. Stick with the 1:8 and plan on loading 75 or 80 gr bullets. It is a terrific combo.

Yup, the 75gr MK are accurate but the jacket on those and the 90g MKs is very thin and behave more like thin light weight varmint bullets when they hit. The 75gr A-Max were a tougher bullet. For a tougher hp bullet look at the 75 or 80gr Bergers, I have shot hogs with those and gotten good half dollar exits running them at 3300fps, the jacket on those is thicker and holds up better. If you want a tougher bullet for it go with 75gr Swift Siroccos I have killed hogs and deer from 10 yards to over 400 yards with them started at just over 3300fps and they work very well. a 175lb live weight buck at 10 yards entrance through ribs exit through ribs and leg meat on the off side about half dollar exit and he ran about 20 yards and went down. Those from a 22-243 27 inch 1:8 barrel.

Nosler also makes a 70gr Accubond that I have not tried yet.

Finding some of those though these days might be a challenge. Swift also makes a 62gr Sirocco and shows them in stock. Swift has also been good when an order was placed letting me know when scheduled production runs were to be and getting those bullets to me when they were being made again. They now on their site have an email when available for bullets that are out of stock. They are not cheap but are good bullets.

Most of the bullets I have are the Hornady 60 gr. flat based hollow point and the 75 gr. HPBT. I would someday like to try the 75 gr. ELD out but the bullets I have seem to work pretty good. Probably won't intentionally take this rifle out deer hunting, I have too many actual deer rifles in the lineup to do that but feral hogs and coyotes are going to get shot at regardless of angle. I just have no sympathy for either.

The 75gr ELD's in my 1/8 Tikka are nasty..

I can’t complain about my 1:8 twist 22-250 using 60 grain Nosler accubonds . I’ve taken coyotes out to 560 ranged yards with that set up. I’ve also used 65 grain SGK with decent results.

What's the weight of those bullets? If they're the 50's you asked about I'm afraid you're going to have a bunch of useless bullets if you go with a 1-8 twist.

Since I started hunting the big ranch 26-27 years ago I'm guessing I've taken well over 500 yotes with the first and second year delivering 83 and 71. Couldn't tell ya how many I shot before that but I hunted them pretty hard back in the 70's when hides would bring good money. My go to yote rifle was a Remington 788 22-250 shooting 50 grain pills through a 1-14 barrel, very fast and seldom got pelt damage. Since 94 I've pretty much stuck with a 1-12 243 shooting 58's, both run about the same velocity with the 243 having a higher chance of pelt damage. If i was to average out the distance in all the yotes I've taken I'd guess 70% were taken inside 150 yards but a few were in the 400 plus yard range. My longest shot was 547 steps to the yote but it happened when I was carrying my 257 Weatherby shooting 87 grain loads. My experience with yotes is they don't give you much time to piddle around, you need to get that bullet out the barrel and on target as quick as possible and you better get used to shooting running and loping yotes. The quicker I can get that bullet to the target the better my chances and the less I have to worry about range and wind the easier this is to accomplish. Out past 400 yards range and wind can become a factor but fast and low trajectory keeps it to a minimum inside 400 to the point I don't even consider it. So it seems like once again I'm going against the majority especially when you specifically said yotes in your original comment. At a minimum I'd go with a 1-10 but would prefer a 1-12 with maxed out 50 and 55 grain bullets. Now I'm going to go look for my helmet and body armor, I'm probably going to need it when I get back from the ranch.

Yep seems all the rage is the long sleek heavier bullets. I shot out a 22-250 barrel, don't know the twist as it was a factory Savage barrel. All I used were 50 to 60 grain bullets. My coyote hunting is mostly seeing one when out checking the cows and maintaining the feeders. They don't hang around long for sure and I like the point and shoot rifles with a flat trajectory. Pelts are not worth much here in Texas generally but they need shooting anyway, pelt damage is not a real consideration. Last year I used a 243 and light 55-58 grain bullets pushed fast. Worked just fine but I want to put a dent in my .224 bullet collection. Years ago I shot a very nice blond looking Coyote (1981 I think) and carried it into the Fur shed outside of Rock Springs Wyoming. Got to say I was shocked when I was offered $120.! With feral hogs being a problem it is worth it to shoot the heavier bullets but I generally hunt them with bigger guns at night.

We'd get 35 for a good yote pelt back in the 70's. Almost 100 percent of the yotes I've taken since 94 have been from the truck, only calling I do is with the CARNIVORE crew when they come up. I've laid off the yotes since they started coming up with the exception of a few yotes that were just begging to be shot. We've got feral hogs on the ranch but they're pretty much just targets of opportunity, I haven't really just went out and hunted them yet. The one's I've shot were from the truck and I left them for the yotes and buzzards. To be honest I don't give a damn about the hog's, I just put a bullet in them and hope they wander off and die, I don't do head shot's on hog's.
