Will never hunt without one again!!! I turn it on after the first skeeter buzzes around me. After turning it on, I hear them buzzing above me (tree climber stand), but they never land on me.
Have had deer within 10yds of my tree with it going and did not phase them.

How well do they work when you're out in the open, rather than inside a box stand? You would think they're less effective with any breeze blowing.

I used mine in a tree climber. If there was a breeze, I moved it over as far as I could so the breeze would blow it in my direction. I haven't had any problems yet. However, you might have issues if you have more than a breeze going through.

do you know if they help with ticks..
i know it is a long shot, but was curious if anyone has tried it for that too.
i plan on picking one up for the skeeters in the treestand, but it would be great if they kept the ticks away too. not even sure if the ticks are up in the trees. i just always seem to find e 2 or 3 of them on me while at the ranch.

Mine works like a champ. Takes about 15 minutes to really kick in but after that there aint a bug around! Worth every dime.

The new OFF clip on is basically the same thing and cheaper. Although it is bright blue. These do work and very well. Niether probably works as well in high winds, but the bugs won't be as bad under those conditions anyhow.

a little breeze blowing they will work just fine; hurricane strength winds...get your rear out of the climber/treestand and don't worry so much about the mosquitos.

They work great for flying insects. I've used them at night sitting on my 4-wheeler in a 5-10 mph wind waiting for coons to show up at the feeder. You set up, turn it on, and in a couple of minutes it's... hey, where'd all the bugs go. Get one, no smell, no sound... no bugs.
Good Hunting, Gary

I can smell a very faint vanilla like odor from mine. Very faint, but it's there. That being said, I've had deer come in downwind of it and never spook. Like others, I think they work great. I can be sitting in my lean too bow stand getting eaten alive by skeeters. Turn on the Thermacell, and within minutes they're gone. I won't be caught hunting in Texas w/o mine for a long time to come.
My only advice is to get all the refills you think you might need right now. Come close to hunting season they get difficult to find.

The repellent pads also come in "scent free." I have only seen them online. They don't stock them in BPS or Academy that I have found. I have not tried them since the deer have not spooked with the regular ones.
Also, they sell the thermocell with cover and estrous scents. Make sure you don't grab that one buy mistake.

Ive used them ever since they came out and swear by them. I do notice an odor with mine though. Its a faint odor but its there but Ive never had anything spook because of it when passing downwind. I might be using the "dirt" scented pads now that I think about it.
Pitman, I was curious about how long the cartridges lasted on those Off things. I would expect they would wear out too fast to warrant spending money on one since I have the thermocells. They might be perfect for the kids though.

The OFF packets last 12hrs. I don't have a thermocell so I don't know how long they last. Refills are around 4 bucks for a pack of two. I also like the smaller size of the Off clip on.

Wow! I was expecting something more like 4 hours out of one of those little things.
I did a little looking at each of their webpages and found the only negative to these things is that you have to use the 12 hours worth of mat up within 2 weeks of first use but Im sure that could be extended if you store it in an airtight container, which is what the Thermacell recommends.
Also, they use different chemicals so if one isnt working as well as youd like, you can try the other one.
I'll try these things for sure now. Thanks for the thread. I learn something new everyday.

Glad to hear it, we have some kind of nat in Mason, TX that is unbareable. I dont know what they do but it feels like they spit specs of acid on you. My buddie forgot his head net last year and had a 22" 12 point under him all night and cound not get a shot. He looked like someone hit him a million times in the forehead and neck with a ballping hammer. Ill bet we all have one this year! Oh and to make matters worse; 1st year on the lease with long time friends and the 22" 12 pt is on my wall!
