A gun is a horrible idea unless the person is prepared to pull the trigger. Yeah but if she won’t use a gun on a attacker what makes you think she will be able to effectively use mace/taser, etc?
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Maths idea of killing somebody doesn’t sit well with a lot of people. The idea of temporarily causing a person great irritation is much easier to justify for some people. The worst thing that can happen is for somebody to pull out a gun and then become timid and have that gun taken away from them and possibly used against them.

You absolutely need to be determined to use deadly force, if the need arises, to carry a gun. I have a limited number of scenarios where that's true, but if I draw my weapon, it's going to be used because I fear for my life or someone else's. I have often wondered how much pepper spray would effect me having run the gas chamber in the Army. I do know that, I wouldn't panic, which is part of why it works and why it doesn't work when people are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
for every stereotype there's a prototype don't be the prototype

I've seen a hose attached to an exhaust and run down a rat hole for rats.

Nothing less.... As a police officer I have either used or seen pepper spray used multiple times. It didn't work, not once.

Check out Byrna.com, I saw them on Hannity last night. They are kind of pricy but won't kill anyone when you shoot them, if that's your goal.

I have a Bersa Thunder 380 pocket gun and love it. I am trained. Also a CZ P10 9MM, Springfield XD in .45 with laser and flashlight loaded with self defense rounds. Any of these are either on me or in my truck or by my bedside or office desk. Wife is a former game warden but only will use Sabre spray as she tends to run and hike a lot and doesn't want the extra weight. So to the OP, if she is not gun trained, the spray is her best option.
