Another thread got me to thinking about something, specifically 4WD systems and the people that purchase them.
I grew up working on vehicles and have always had an interest in the mechanical aspects of vehicle systems. Through years of working on them, as well as having peers who are gear heads as well, I am pretty familiar with most vehicle system operations and I'm comfortable working on them as needed. I think that by default, I wrongly assume other people are just as knowledgeable of vehicular system attributes and abilities. Mainly, I assume that an owner would know what engine he/she has, what drive type, and what various options are installed on their vehicle. While discussing a new purchase with a coworker who also owns a 4X4, I quickly realized that he had no knowledge of LSD's, Posi-Trac, open differentials, lockers, etc. He couldn't tell me what he had from the factory on his truck and it blew my mind. I just assumed that because he had a purchased a 4X4 new from the dealer that he knew what he was getting, but I was clearly wrong.
I completely understand that many people just don't care about vehicles and that's entirely fair/fine, absolutely nothing wrong with that. I completely understand because I'm that way with computers while some people would think I'm crazy for not knowing every piece of hardware in my computer. That being said, I'm curious what portion of the population wants a 4X4 just for the sake of having one, vs those who spec out a vehicle's 4X4 system for certain attributes and actually use them for something other than being a street queen talking point.

I know enough about cars/trucks to get stuck in mud, and I am ok with that. My knowledge of the human body allows me enough "flexibility" to pay someone to know about my cars....catch my drift?
I do know I have a diesel 4x4 with available locking rear differential (have used it a couple times actually), but don't ask me about the gear ratios or anything like that, its all greek to me. I know it can carry and tow a lot of weight.

I've got 4x4 on my truck. Did I "spec it out"? Nope. Figured the factory knew what they we're doing when they built it. It's never going to be a rock crawler. It just has to work as needed to get me going in muddy fields or icy driveways.

I'm almost 47 and have never owned a 4x4 truck, Dad had a few different ones growing up but most of his were always paid for by employer. I'm now on a lease that the camp is about 5 miles through 2 track ranch road. I am looking to purchase my 1st 4x4 in the next few weeks. I have a buddy that works for a ford dealer looking for me something now. Told him all I care about is, V8, 4x4, towing package and electric windows / doors. I want just a regular cab, new 4x4. Harder to find than you would think. As for all the details? Dont really care.
Haven't had it in years but never spit any out. I am a sucker for happy endings and strapped cowboys.

I've been on both sides. I used to just buy whatever 4x4 I liked and had the other features I wanted. Then, a few years ago I ended up with a top of the line 4x4 system, lockers, etc. and saw what a huge difference it makes. My last two vehicles, I have thoroughly researched and tracked down exactly what I wanted. My current vehicle was almost impossible to find, but is exactly what I wanted and is worlds better than a "standard" 4x4. I won't go back.

I'm 'bout to leave the mountains of southwest Virginia after 11 years. The people that want 4X4s around here are them that ain't got one. In less than a week, I'll be arriving in Yoakum and will be starting a job working on 1100 acres of ranch. My boss found a '09 Silverado ext. cab HD2500 4X4 for me and it's waiting for me to show up and take it home.

It's not whether or not you use 4x4, it's when you need it's there. I use it maybe 10 times a year due to snow, mud or heavy rain. However, my wife drives an AWD vehicle. I watched in horror one day as she did three 360 degree spins on about 1/2" of water in a front wheel drive Murano. Next day she was back in an AWD. I have peace know it's there when she needs it.

If I need 4 wheel drive I take the Kubota. My truck is too nice to drive in the pasture.

After riding off-road in a 4x4 with open diffs, its hard to justify why anyone would want an open diff 4X4. I know its a strong opinion, but I feel like its worse than a 2WD with an auto-locker.

I almost bought a 2WD truck last year. Got a piece of property in 2018 and have been driving a 2WD Jeep Grand Cherokee on it. There were a few times using the Jeep got sketchy, but generally, I was able to get through the mud by simply speeding up. There was only 1 trip where I had to park the Jeep at the front and hike to the barn to retrieve the ATV to use that weekend. That was last spring when it seemed to rain non-stop. Finally decided I needed a truck when it came time to plant summer food plots last year. My father (who has a truck) was traveling and a small window of opportunity opened when the soil had the right temperature/moisture level to start the process. Ended up borrowing my employee's truck so I could purchase and haul 1,600 lbs of fertilizer to my property. I didn't like the idea of relying on someone else's truck so I convinced the wife to let me sell my Jeep and get a truck. I wanted something really nice since my daily use is driving to and from work in the middle of DFW. I figured that despite having roads on my property that get extremely muddy... I could always use my 4x4 tractor to pull myself out or use the ATVs to get to camp. My two options were to buy a fully loaded 2WD truck with all the bells and whistles or to get one trim level down with 4x4. I ended up with the 4x4. I regretted it for a couple of weeks but thanked myself on the 3rd trip out to the property with my new truck. There is a road that passes next to a pond. Seems the pond has sprung a leak. The road is narrow with a small drop off on one side and the retaining wall on the other. Literally no way to go around it. Even with 4x4... my truck struggles through it. Certainly could've driven ATVs through it that trip, but I had one of my in-laws along and it was in the low 30s and windy. Had hogs show up on the cellular game cam and wanted to ensure my in-law could pop one (his first). We were able to get over to the blind quickly and pop one of the hogs... which was the highlight of the weekend. Started rambling here... but since I purchased it I've used 4x4 numerous times. Like your co-worker, I don't know much about 4x4 other than I can turn it on and it gets me through sticky situations

I've always been a car guy, and for that matter a 'what-makes-it-tick' guy. It would honestly be refreshing if I could dump all that useless information out and replace it, but oh well. I remember displacement, output, gearing, etc for not only my vehicles but most of what's available out there, or did for many years. I asked a guy a while back who was driving a new 1/2-ton Denali which engine he got (since they quit just offering the big one and offered both the 5.3 and the 6.2) and he couldn't even tell me it was a V8. They live among us, breed, and vote.

My 4x4 gets used very little but it has 100% paid for its self when I needed it. I can think of a half dozen times or so that I would have been walking without it.

I know quite a bit about the 4x4 I drive, but I am a mechanical kinda guy that enjoys knowing how stuff works. I do have a list of must-haves when I buy a truck, and I will shop around until I find them. Learned to drive in a ‘72 Jeep J10 (straight 6, three speed), and got out in the mud many times to lock in the front hubs. Have owned 7 (I think) 4x4 trucks since, and have stuck a number of them over the years. You learn what works, and what doesn’t. I’ve hunted and fished all over Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Colorado, and Wyoming. A lot of the places I’ve been were inaccessible unless you had a 4x4 and knew how to use it. I lifted my current truck just to get across an Oklahoma creek that was sketchy at best, but some dang fine deer hunting on the other side. My truck is definitely not a parking lot queen, and shows the scratches and dents that go along with off-roading, but it’s a tool to get me where I want to go. 93K and counting.
