This morning on the way to work I found an otter dead in the road in front of my house. Have any of you seen one before? Are otters common in East Texas? I was completely unaware of there existance in this area. Are they protected?

we see quite a few of them at the lease and on Sam Rayburn. Those jokers sound like a whole herd of hogs coming through the woods. Not sure if they are protected or not, but you know the east tx way........

There are a lot of river otters in east texas. We had a family of 7-9 in our cove a few years back. They left and have not seen them since but I'm sure they are still in the lake. Sulphur River basin has a good number of them also.

Are you sure it was an otter and not a neutra? They look somewhat similar.

I think I shot one about 20 years ago in E tx. Not a beaver and not a nutria for sure

They are in East Texas for sure and have seen at Lake Lavon. I have trapped and sold the hides when living in Mississippi and have shot them in our catfish pond.

A friend has otters on his place south of Tyler.
They showed up within the last 6-8 months.

There are otters in East Texas we studied them and there diminishing range in college.Nutria and Otters look nothing a like outside the water.JMO

Yep they are in East Texas. We are in the process of trying to trap/shoot 4 of them on our ranch just outside of Bryan TX.
Quick little buggers.
We have enough youth. How about a fountain of "smart"?

I catch at least 1 every year when i trap beaver at my place wich i hate but cant do much about it with killer style traps.

River otters are not that uncommon in east Texas. We had a few at our lease. Been stocking the ponds with catfish and bass for years and once the otters moved in, bye bye fish! They cleaned out every pond we had! Land owner wanted them DEAD. I was not sure if it was legal to shoot them. So they got a pass from me.............They are pretty creeters and they have to eat too......

I've never seen one at lavon, but that doesn't mean they aren't there. I have seen mink at the damn living in the rocks and also Hubbard. I could use a family of them to clean out my small pond in Paris, it is overrun with 8" bass.

Ive seen them pn Cooper and on White Oak near the Sulphur River. They are pretty big critters.

We see them every year along the Sabine River during the sandbass run north of Toledo Bend. They are really agile swimmers and alot of fun to watch.

wait 'til you walk up to a deer stand and see 2 black weird lookin' critters under your feeder. Whatever you do don't pick one up, those thangs are RANK! washed a pair of gloves several times and still can't get the smell out of them.

lots of otters in southeast tx i am between beaumont and houston and we trap anywhere from 70 to 100 a year

We've got atleast four on our lease in Kaufman. I see them every year when the sleu get's low.

I ran into a family of them on Wilson Creek (Lake Lavon tributary). Pretty cool looking, they even barked at me and the dog. Definitely not a nutria (I lived in La. for 15yrs.)
...smelled like, victory.

At my place near Mexia my dad claimed to see a Otter in our stock tank on two different occasions. We laughed and laughed at him... Well when the game biologist came by to look over our place for doe tags my ol man asked him. He said yes there are "river otters" in the area that cruse the rivers and creeks and then come into ponds and wear out the fish. And I'll be go to heck two weeks later (Thanksgiving Day) there he was in our pond. A BIG Otter just chillin out in our tank. Floating around on his back like he didn't have a care in the world. I was surprised at his size though. Bout the size of a beaver...

They're not protected, but you do need to obtain a CITES tag to have one in your possesion.

we had one in our tank east of huntsville. Big sucker, prolly 4 foot long. and quick too.
new it was legal to shoot, but never saw one before, so I passed at the shot. never saw it again though
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

I took one when I was a kid with a .22 LR. Their hide is worth a lot in the winter, well at least compared to a raccoon these days. But you must get CITES tags from a dealer to sell them or transport them across state lines. The good thing is that CITES tags are free.
