Looking for Budget .30-06 Bolt Action to replace my old 1917 #7330542 10/29/18 04:34 PM

Good morning,
This past weekend I had problems with my Remington 1917 while trying to sight the scope in for the upcoming general season. For some reason, the bolt would load the round in correctly anymore. It sort of slips and I hear the firing pin click as another round is being chambered. (No it doesn't fire when it does it, Thank God)
It's an old gun and I have done repairs to it in the past, but parts are getting harder to find (and more expensive when I do find them).

So, I'm thinking of just retiring it. I'm not really attached to it, it was given to me 15 years ago to forgive a debt. I'm not sure how old it was even then.

I'm going to get a "budget-friendly but decent value" .30-06 Bolt Action combo.
I was looking at these 3 combos (rifle & scope), and wanted to know if anyone has had one for a while and have any pros/cons about them?

Mossberg Patriot
Savage Arms Axis-II
Remington Model 783

Don't own any of the three you have listed. Of the 3 Id go with the Mossberg then the savage. both of those are better than the 783.

There was a weatherby vanguard 30-06 in the classifieds for 300 brand new unfired. Pretty sure somone bought them from Walmart when they put them on mega clearance thinking they were going to make some money re-selling them and it backfired. I'd see if they still have it, would be a good gun.

I agree with this 100%.

Of those three, I only have experience with one. The Savage. My brother-in-law has one in .308, and a buddy has one in .223. They are both happy with them. I used to have a Savage 111, and it was a great rifle. The only thing I would do different, is to fork over the few extra bucks to get the combo that comes with the Nikon scope instead of the cheap no-name scope.

After looking at Patriot, I went with the Axis II as a utility gun that I can leave in my trailer without a major worry that it might be lost in a break-in. The quality of craftsmanship with the Axis II far exceeded that of the Patriot. Where the Patriot showed an uneven and sometimes wide gap between the free-floated barrel and stock, the gap is clean and consistent with my Axis II.

I’ve never put my hands on the ones listed but in that price range the Ruger American is a great rifle. If the vanguard mentioned in the classifieds meet your needs they’re also great guns.

Okay, thank yall for the responses.

I haven't seen any review on the 783.
The only review of the Patriot I've seen is on Hickok45's youtube channel.

I'll be checking out the Axis and American.

Thanks again

The Patriot is the best of those three.
