6.8 for the Army M4/SAW I’ll admit I like 6.8, I have two in an AR platform with one being an SBR. Wouldn’t mind getting one of the Remington 700 in 6.8.

Well, compare that article with this report of request for bids for the .264 USA developed by the AMU. The Army Marksmanship Unit’s .264 USA – a medium-sized 6.5mm round in-between the 6.5mm Grendel and 6.5mm Creedmoor in size – is not yet dead, it seems. The round, about which little had been heard in official channels for a couple of years, is the subject-in-part of a new solicitation released by the Combating Terrorism Technical Support Office’s Technical Support Working Group (CTTSO TSWG). The Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) describes a need for a Lightweight Intermediate Caliber Cartridge (LICC) and an “Individual Weapon System (IWS), designed to “overmatch” targets out to 800 meters. The specifications for the new weapon are quire ambitious, with a threshold velocity requirement of 2,650 ft/s with a 108gr bullet, and an objective requirement of 2,750 ft/s with the same, both from an 11.5" barrel! https://www.thefirearmblog.com/blog/2018...-carbines-pdws/

Well, the 6.8 bullets are more blunt than any of the 6.5mm bullets. Meaning, the 6.8 bullets have a much shorter ogive to tip length. Because of this, you can seat the bullet out further and cram more powder in the case to gain speed. The listed 2650 fps with a 108 grain bullet and only having 11.5" of barrel to do it in, make it very challenging. That's a big task! You need powder, you need room for the powder, and a bullet that does not seat deep into the case like a 6.5mm would.

The cool thing though, is having some cool .277" bullets that are armor piercing, incendiary bullets, or some cool new stuff that they come up with. It would be great for blowing through 3 deer!

I wonder what they are going to base the round on. I will die laughing if they neck up the Creedmoore to .277".

ISIS, and Taliban are rejoicing. They will maintain their "fight from 400 meters out, or farther" tactic.

Why can't they either lengthen the Grendel case or make the 6.8 case in a bigger diameter? I realize at some point pressure comes into play but it sure seems like the envelope could be pushed a lot farther than it has.

Why can't they either lengthen the Grendel case Then it won't fit in an AR-15 platform. You have a max length of 2.250" (or 2.260") as max length. or make the 6.8 case in a bigger diameter? If you make the bullet bigger, it adds weight. Weight decreases your velocity. Weight also adds much more logistics problems when shipping ammo to battle zones. Hence the polymer case idea that is taking off now.

Most the time when they short at you they are just trying to harass you or reroute your convoy into a large amush or IED or a complex ambush with a mixture of SAF, IEDs, and RPGs if they hit you with their AK that’s just a plus. We did get in an ambush once where they shot us up with armor piercing rounds and lots of RPGs like 15-20 hitting 4 of our vehicles some multiple times. I don’t think the armor piercing rounds were from AKs though most likely some type of machine gun luckily our armor still stopped them but many were imbedded deep in the armor. This particular ambush was close 50-75 yards but in an urban setting in Paktika Province.

They didn't let us handle weapons, they told us they were dangerous.

Yes, with their ultra high BC 7.62X39. Got more azz than the 5.56mm So does the 6.8. Absolutely. Which one is better it hitting things far away, 6.8 or 6.5mm in current configurations?

I would agree with you on the 6.5 being better at distance. What I see as being a deciding factor is in the AR -15 platform we are talking Grendel and 6.8 and of those 2 the 6.8 is more reliable with feeding and the Grendel bolts are weaker.
