Do all the manufacturers use the same bluing procedures but prep the metal before differently? Or do they have different methods of bluing? Does Remington sandblast theirs first, while say Weatherby smooths their action/barrels before bluing?

Idk, but Ruger's older M77s bluing I always thought outshined the others

Seems Ruger, Weatherby, Sako. I’m sure there are tons of others but you see what I mean. How do they do it now compared to the old ways that aren’t allowed to be done here anymore?

Most big companies use hot caustic bluing. There might be slight changes in salts and temperatures, but as a whole they are all pretty similar. The preparation of the metal before bluing dictates how it looks. Bead blasting will be different levels of matte looking, highly polished metal would be glossy. Both guns could be blued in the same tank at the same time and look drastically different.

This is pretty much spot on.

An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

And whatever Remington does to their Walmart ADL's should be stopped!

I just can't see coating rifle parts with something that seems like fine sand mixed with a binder. And it rusts easily!

Hot bluing really isn’t a coating per se.

Have you examined a 700 ADL lately? Doesn't look like hot bluing to me.

Ive handled them within the last two years. If still the same the reason for the appearance is because they use such a large/aggressive bead blast material. The rougher the finish the easier it is for it to rust, even if it’s blued.
