I have a 6.8 ar built for pigs- what would be an optimum scope for use inside 200 yards that gathers light well?budger would be $250 and below. I have a Nikon 3x9 p223 but thinking there might be something better for nighttime use

Leupold scopes tend to do well at night using lights
A vx 3 would be good. You would have to buy used but they exist close to your range
A lot of the cheaper scopes are nice during the day but really fall off at dark

Take a look at Primary Arms, my friend and I both have one for hunting under a light. They work great and not a bad price.

Something low power, in the 1x-3x max. You want lower power magnification for lower powered light. If you want more magnification, then you will need a brighter light to help see. I killed many of pigs with a cheap Weaver 1-3 power scope on a 44 mag lever gun sitting in bow stands for night hunting. It works well.

I don't know why I don't fiddle around to learn more about the scopes I have on hand under very low light conditions (maybe because I have all the lights, NV, and thermal, etc.) but one that really surprised me on a moonlit night was a Vari-X III 2.5-8x. I had a light mounted on the rifle but was checking it out with the light turned off, and I could have easily shot a pig by moonlight. We didn't even see any pigs at all that night so I did not get to try it. My new VX-3i 2.5-8x is noticeably brighter than the old Vari-X III in daylight, but I'm not sure that means it would be brighter by moonlight. I guess I should find out for myself.

I've used Leupold Vx3 Burris xtr ii and Leupold Mark 5HD with a red light and have had good luck with all. I've had buddies try with Nikon and Vortex pst and complain they couldn't see very well. I would use something in the 3-15 or 3-10 maybe 4-20 power.

I would use something in the 3-15 or 3-10 maybe 4-20 power. Back in the day, we used Weaver K4s with spotlights to hunt jackrabbits and did fine, even beyond 150 yards. Those were by no means "junk scopes," though. Just not as good as what you can get these days.

With your budget I’d go with a Burris Fullfield II or a Minox ZL3.

I have used all kinds of scopes at night that worked good, most were 50mm. A lighted reticle sure helps when you have pigs that are not well lit under the light. A black pig at night with black cross-hairs can be difficult to get on the cross-hairs.

Before thermal I hunted with a green kill light and scope...trying to shoot a black pig at night without a least a red dot in the crosshair was difficult. I’d spend a little more and get a Leupold VXR. You can find them for about $450 and they are great scopes. I have two of them.
