This time of year, Whitetail Does are on high alert to protect their fawns.. Sr. Pro Staffers Charles Starkey & Starkey Pepaw experienced this first hand when playing a fawn distress on the FOXPRO Inc.!

Deer will come to fawn distress yr around even bucks yes sir.. great hand calls to use in early bow season. However they seem to be a little more aggressive with them this time of year with new fawns on the ground

About a month ago I was in a very large field bordered by a creek on one side. I was bored and was having no luck with hogs or coyotes so I played fawn distress. Within a couple minutes I could count 7 deer that popped out of who knows where all looking towards the caller. This was at night but pretty cool with the thermal.

Within a couple minutes I could count 7 deer that popped out of who knows where all looking towards the caller. This was at night but pretty cool with the thermal. I bet that was really cool to see at night. I was riding around a ranch late one evening in mid July when I came over a ridge and noticed 5 adult coyotes laying on a tank dam about mile away. I drove half-way their and tried to sneak in the rest of the way. When I got there they were all gone. So I laid down on top of the tank dam and starting calling with a hand distressed cottontail call. I had a doe to the south immediately start running right at me stomping and snorting. When I called she ran and when I stopped she stopped. She finally saw me and ran off. I called her back again along with 2 more does. Then stilling laying on the tank dam I kept calling an back the other direction I saw a flash running towards me. It was a coyote running full out to me with another doe on his tail chasing him towards me. I made the mistake of not sitting up and tried to shoot laying down off my tripod. The coyote got so close(less than 20 yds) I could not see anything but a blur in the scope which was a fixed 6x on my .22 mag. Needless to say I missed but the reason I missed was because I was laughing so hard at the coyote running right at me with the doe on his tail. He found another gear right when he got downwind of me and right after that when I missed him. Those does came in to do some damage to whatever was attacking the fawn. I watched 9 Mule Deer does in West Texas chase a coyote for over 400 yards till he topped over a ridge with all those does on his tail. Same thing in Kansas as a herd of over 20 Mule Deer bucks does and fawns chased a coyote in a circle till they topped over a ridge out of sight. If had my call I could have called all those deer in right to me.
