Wondering which ammo I should get from Chad for my tikka 7mm-08. The barrel is cut down to 18 inches and I do hunt with a suppressor. I will be using it mostly for deer and hogs out to 200 yards. I will do some target shooting as well out to 500 or 600 yards.
I am thinking 150 eld x, 162 a max or 162 eld x

Out to 200 yards, anything he produces will work great on deer and hogs. Probably not the answer you are looking for.

162 ELD-X 162 A-Max Flip a coin. Hunting at 200 and in wouldn't the 150 do well and give more speed in that 18" barrel?

I'd lean more towards the 150 ELD-X for closer in shots on a shorter barrel. It will get your speeds up some, and the 150 has a great BC. The 162 is also fine. They do hit a little harder, with the heavier weight. But it's a toss up. All are good choices.

The payload and BC of the 162 will deliver as much energy on animals at those distances, but it will do better for the long range target shooting he also wants to do. One load will do it all. I have shot 162's a ton, and 150's for 100 bullets just to see what I thought. I am going back to 162's in my 17" 7mm-08 A.I.

I will do some target shooting as well out to 500 or 600 yards.
The two don't go together as well as the 150 or 162 gr.

Hitting steel at 5-600 is no trick with a 140 AB, and for hunting ranges of out to 200 yds as the OP said, I'd take an accubond over any ELD or AMAX made.

162 eld-m or amax would be my choice.

At 7mm-08 velocities with the 160 class bullets you are not going to be pushing them so fast to worry about bullet integrity and holding together on deer and hogs.
Inside 350 yards I like the 140s that I have been using since 1982 with the 7mm-08 though have taken Nosler 140gr Ballistic Tips to a little over 500 yards. Now if I were seriously going to shoot it out to 600 yards or beyond it would be with the 162 class bullets for the higher BC. elevation is not the problem but the higher BC will help on the wind calls

Yes, yes it does, ferociously. You're wrong. Some of us have over-full freezers at the end of 7mm A-Max and ELD-X bullets.

This is what I'm thinking too...but I might be stuck in the 80's I've got a 7-08 project that is an Encore cut to 16" (and threaded for a suppressor) and made an AI. I bought 162's but I think I'm going to start with 140 Ballistic Tips. There have been a BUNCH of deer fell to that combination and while old school, it does work.

If you are hand loading try the original 140gr Barnes triple shock the one without the plastic tip.

120nbt are tough as nails too for just hunting. Bc isn't grear though so you'll suffer a bit after 200yds with the velocity a 16" gives.

I have culled near 50 whitetail does with a 120 BT in my 7-08, 17 in one day. Seldom do I "catch" one in an animal. I have a self imposed 200 yd limit that I try to adhere to myself, less than that in high winds. The 140 AB's that I'm so fond of can easily take medium sized game (in my case aooudad, muleys, whiteys) much farther, and the 140 BT can do the same thing easily. The BT/AB's are interchangeable in my Varget loads, as they give the same POI.
I'll be using the 120 BT again next week on my first Axis hunt. I'll be running them at 2800fps since I don't anticipate long shots, and expect less bloodshot meat.

I am not doubting your success with the 140's on animals. But OP wants A bullet to hunt with, as well as target shoot with. A 140 gr 7mm is going to be more diffucult to long range target shoot with than a higher BC, heavier bullet.
