Just a very small stone or diamond steel pencil-style sharpener.
I would strongly consider Havalon also it’s what I have gone to now. No sharpening needed just change blade and go.
I learned long ago you can't reason someone out of something they don't reason themselves into.

What’s your favorite knife sharpener to carry on a hunt? 3rivers makes a good one, broadhead/knife. I pretty much only use outdoor razor edge, lite. Use to be a havalon fan but will only use them for capping skulls, To many broken blades and pooped pants.

Havalon is the way to go for a backpack.
If you’re stuck on traditional steel, I like a Smith 8” diamond. It’s not real small, but it’s quick and will fit blade contours a stone won’t.

I have several these scattered around. In my truck, boat, hunting pack, kitchen drawer, and my desk at work!

LINK That thing is a beast. Although I do like the Leather strop, that reminds me I need to order another strop and some compound soap
