Picked up an old Colt Single Action at the Tulsa gun show this past weekend. Been looking for one for a while. Numbers matching lettered civilian model made in 1883. Too late for the Indian Wars but it may have done in a bad man or two.

I’m practicing my quick-draw in front of the mirror now. Johnny Ringo has died 18 times already.

Nice. I've been wanting one for years. Wish I had known (and had the money) back in 1980 when I was working at a pawn/gun shop. We had a pile of the 3rd generations for around $350 each.

Nice find. Wish I knew you were going... We probably crossed paths somewhere.
There were some very nice collector pieces this time.

what caliber is this one
From 1873 through 1940 (with small numbers assembled during and after World War II, the so-called "Pre-War, Post-War" model), production of the Colt Single Action Army reached 357,859. This is identified as the "Pre War" or "First Generation" of the model. Calibers, at least thirty in all, ranged from .22 rimfire through .476 Eley, with approximately half, or 158,884 (including Bisley and Flat Top Target variations), chambered for .45 Colt. The next most prevalent were the .44-40 Winchester Center fire (WCF) at 71,392; 38-40 (38 WCF) at 50,520; 32-20 Winchester (32 WCF) at 43,284 and, the 41 Colt at 19,676.[7]

It’s a .45 Colt. I really know just enough to be dangerous but I think that was the most common caliber in the early years of production. I see now your numbers bear that out.

There were some very nice collector pieces this time. Yes as always it was really too much to take in. After a while it sort of becomes overwhelming because you feel like you need to look at everything before “pulling the trigger” on one. This one was in my wheelhouse date, condition, and price wise so I was glad it was still there when I was ready to make an offer on it. We go every year so just shoot me a PM next time you go.

Nice score. A decent shooter grade Colt SAA is on my bucket list to own. Maybe when the kids all get through college.....

There were some very nice collector pieces this time. Same here. We go just about every April. That's the show to find things you don't usually see. I saw license plates from as far away as NY and Alaska.

Very nice! I really need to go to that show. It sounds like the good shows I used to attend many years ago. You would love it Grizz. Mostly old stuff very little “modern” stuff. 11 acres of guns. Some are there just to show off their collections but most are there to deal. Since there is so much competition there are deals to be had with a little haggling.

That sounds like my kind of gun show. I know what you mean about where the gun might have been. I think the same thing about my late 19th century Morgan dollars. I like to think Wyatt Earp used one of them to buy a whiskey at a Tombstone saloon.

The stories it could tell.... I bought one years ago at an auction that was sold in 1883 by a family member out of their gun shop here in TX I too often wish it could share the adventures it had with me. But I just have to hold it and imagine who, what, where and why. Great find, enjoy it, appears to be in great shape. If we ever shoot our Biesen's together bring that along too.

Nice find! I just found out that Schuyler, Hartley and Graham, of NY, NY, was the largest firearms dealer in the US in 1860.
edited to add: They changed the name to just "Hartley and Graham" by 1880 after Jacob Schuyler retired in 1876. Buffalo Bill Center for The West site has a really cool write-up on that gun dealer. You should check it out if you haven't already.

I will thanks! Think of the designs of the Colt revolvers, the Winchester levers, the Remington rolling block, the Mauser bolt actions, the Winchester 97, the Colt 1911, the Browning A5...... All iconic. All remain the basis of gun design to this very day. I don’t think there has been a truly new non-military gun platform developed since the Benelli inertia design many years ago. (Maybe I am missing one, but you get the point. The late 19th/early 20th century was the Golden Age of gun design.)
