Taylor county Set up in a good spot, had 4 or 5 gobbling from the roost and right before they came off heard a couple of hens. So we started some tree yelps and got some response
We had a weird thing, 3 birds came in behind us, never saw us, walked up to our decoys and one strutted at our Thunder Chicken for a short time. We should have shot him but my son wanted to try for a double and the other bird never gave us a shot. The 3rd bird was a hen.
The gobblers wandered off and the hen stayed around for awhile and wandered off We heard several more fly down but after they came off the roost, they shut up. They were already with hens it seems
Never saw another one, heard several.
We did get to shoot a big orange pig in the face with our turkey guns though..that was fun

Why does TPD have opening day so late here? It's like starting deer season after the rut is going on..

Lots of birds gobbling near Breckenridge. Last night the coyotes had them gobbling back and forth down the river. Lots of jakes, plenty of mature toms.

Any idea what’s going on?

Young county. Set up on one I roosted last night. Had two answering me this morning. Almost pulled one in, but I can't get them to leave their hens. Also way to much human activity around me. With the wind picking up, I think it's time to do something else the rest of the morning.

Birds were quiet till 8:15, then they let loose. Can still hear them gobbling in several locations on the ranch. Had 2 gobblers come in and a Jake later, but no big birds yet this morning.

What's the best way to hunt them in the evening? Ambush style when they are returning to roost?

Run and gun. Try to strike up a hot bird. Water is typically good too. And traveling back to roost the last hour is always a solid approach. Just don’t want to set up too close and booger them off an established roost.

Sat AM I setup around where they typically cross into our place in Baylor Co. It turns out that our neighbors hunt turkey and setup between where they roost and our place. Exactly what I would have done, can't blame 'em, but I knew it was gonna be a long day when I heard the shot. I did see a hen with the biggest beard I've seen.
A few gobbles on the roost, then around 9 a few more but they never made it over. Headed back home for Easter, going back out next weekend.

Callahan County: Saturday morning, couple of quick setups, no responses. Moving to the next location when we spotted turkeys walking fast toward us. About ten hens, followed by four jakes/gobblers. Sat down quick and started calling. Gobblers were laser-focused on the hens. Two stopped momentarily to move toward us, but quickly returned to chasing the hens. Couldn't get a shot. Heard a few gobbles later, but could not get any responses.
Sunday morning, grandson shot a nice gobbler at a feeder. Sunday afternoon, spotted another gobbler while driving on the lease, grandson jumped out and shot it.
Heard some gobbling in different directions, but could never get any response. Expect it will get better in the next couple weeks.
