That's what my MRI showed Having an Epidural steroid injection a week from Tuesday. May work , may not. Sumbich hurts like he77 till my meds kick in. Gives me a couple hours relief, then I take some more. Nothing heavy, a pill called Gabapentin to calm the sciatic nerves and a few ES Tylenol. Injection Could last a week, a year, two years? Different for everyone. Cant have more than three a year. The Doctors are really anti surgery until a last resort. Thank God for Medicare and my supplement. Hope I'm better for the longrange rifle match at Jasons. Got a Prairie Dog shoot in Jume

I got that same diagnosis. The pain was huge. I suffered for a long time until my sister in law suggested deep tissue massage. I thought that was a ridiculous idea, but I went for the massage, which also hurt like h___. After 6 months and a few more painful massages, I’m doing great. Now...just because that worked for me, it might not work for you, but in my mind there was NO chance it could help me.
My pain was coming from the various muscle groups around the spine, which was caused by nerve pinch from the spinal stenosis (which might not be as bad as yours). The muscles were locked up, causing big pain from anything more involved than wiggling my eyebrows. I really thought I was toast. Gave away almost all of my tennis gear. Now i’m somewhat active again.
Best of luck to you. I know how bad the pain can be.

Bummer Buzz. Try that deep tissue massage, can't hurt. Yeah. Well...not much, anyway. Give it a try, Buzz, and don't let the doctors continue to pollute your body with chemicals and crap.

I had the injections a month ago and have 70-80% improvement. I recommend you take the anesthesia as I did not and it was a little unnerving.

I was really surprised at what that deep tissue massage did for me. I was hurting so bad. So I followed directions from the Wimmin folk and went to this scroungy looking woman. And what she did hurt pretty bad, and I left feeling no relief at ALL. But day two it felt better and day three I felt much better. Came back to Texas and found a lady in Groesbeck for further massage. I swear she put a thumb completely through me once. I begged for mercy and she just laughed. Time and massages passed and I feel great.
To be perfectly clear, those massages hurt, and I hate them. But...it works (for me).

Regarding the anti-surgery element. I had a pinched nerve in my neck and was counseled to do the steroid injections, etc. Unfortunately, my disk shortly thereafter ruptured and I had an immediate C6/C7 fusion. When my disk ruptured, about a third of my left arm went numb, which was an "interesting" experience. After the surgery, I still had perhaps 10 to 15% numbness in my left hand/arm, depending on the day. It's enough to be noticeable when I pay attention to it, but not enough to be a problem under normal circumstances. I can't help but think that surgery before the rupture would have prevented the numbness issue. My takeaway is that the only fix for a real structural issue, such as my nerve pinched by compression, is surgery. I don't suggest this casually, but it's important to be honest with yourself about the real nature of your injury.

Buzz. Find a lady at the Tom Landry \Fitness Center on Peak, just around the corner from big BaylorScott& White on Gaston by the name of Dr Evangeline Cayton. She is a tiny little Japanese Dr who specializes in both Eastern and Western therapy. She was the 1st Dr who nailed my diagnosis in the 1st 10 minutes of my 1st Appt with her. She designed a therapy program for me that a local Carrollton Health Center followed and was able to resolve my spinal issues without the use of any chemicals when all the other Dr's I'd been to wanted to pound my arse with Mo Meds & Multi flavors of Opiods.
My refferal to her came from a Neurological specialist I'd gone to to do a Laminectomy or another procedure a close friend had where the Dr takes a drill and " carves open and relieves the spinal opening" around the spinal cord where it passes thru and the "fingers" extend to give nerve signals to the various parts of the body thay are attached to coming out of the vertabrae and relieves the contact pressure and rubbing of the spinal cord on the collapsed disc areas surrounding the vertabrea from the usually crushed or damaged disc. The Surgeon refused after doing a film of my cervical spinal area, 'cause as he said you only get one chance with a Laminectomy spinal fusion and you don't have but One pair of vertabrea that are affected in the C4 & C5 joint. LOTS of painfull therapy but it worked, and I never had to have the Laminectomy ...yet. Ron

To be perfectly clear, those massages hurt, and I hate them. But...it works (for me). That's because the person doing the massage didn't realize there's a difference between deep tissue and deep pressure. My clients might have slight soreness the day after, but it doesn't hurt during. The superficial muscles have to be relaxed before you go deeper. You go layer by layer. I'm glad it worked for you, but very sorry it hurt during the massage.

Depends on the therapist. Most charge at least $60/hr for deep tissue. I would call around. You can find therapists in your area through the link I provided.

Lonestarson, I called that type massage “deep tissue” because I could not remember what the lady actually called what she did. She would identify certain points that controlled certain muscle groups and press on it. That’s what hurt. The massage part itself was uncomfortable, but not painful. It wasn’t really like any other massage I ever had. I had come to think that a massage included New Age music, incense, and baloney such as that, which is why I resisted going to the masseuse for real pain relief. So...when I left that first massage and felt no better at all, that sort of reinforced my scepticism about the process. But then after a day or two those hard-as-rocks muscle knots started loosening up, and I felt much better. I could move around with much less pain, and now I’m mostly pain free unless i’m lifting heavy stuff, chainsawing all day, or playing tennis a bit too hard. But just the fact that I can actually hit a tennis ball and run around is something I never thought I could do again.
I looked on her website. What she does, or at least what she calls it, is myofascial release. Whatever...I’m sold on it.
As for Buzzsaw’s problem, if it’s due to spinal damage that’s beyond a certain degree, I don’t know if anything other than surgery will fix it. But i’d sure give that myofascial release type massage a try before I went under the knife. Doctors love to cut, and they are basing their decisions to do so on THEIR opinions, which are better than our decisions probably. Probably, but not positively.

Yeah, it's probably Trigger Point massage. None needs to be painful, like you've described. Unfortunately, a lot of therapists don't take the time, or initiative, to learn less painful ways to utilize modalities. I might have been more rough than I, or my clients, would have liked when I first started. However, after being on the receiving end of those types of massages, I continued to study and practice. Massage should not be painful. There might be some discomfort, but the therapist should back off and use another technique to work with the nervous system and soft tissue to change it.

I appreciate it, but I really just work on the students, athletes, and faculty / staff at the university.
I would try to call around and talk to therapists in the area and ask what their beliefs are about massage and if they can give me a list of referrals. I do that when people ask me if I'm any good. Plus, if what I do doesn't help, I'll let them come back for another session and try to make it right at no charge. Most therapists that are secure in their knowledge and abilities should be willing to do that.

Colt sorry to hear that. Still recovering myself after a 4 level laminectomy. I can't even imagine going through that again. I would rather have somebody just take me out back and stomp me to death. Hoping your follow up goes well for you.
