Those of you that hunt Montana, and the Dakotas are you able to hunt from a UTV on public lands or on private?

Ii hunted in North Dakota several years ago. A friend and I flew up there and met a group from Kansas. The group included Brice Flaming, with Lou and Jill. We stayed in a cabin owned by a local farmer. He had maps with coveys marked.
My friend and I flew back. The Kansas group planed to road hunt their way back to Kansas.
Quail hunting is like walking into, and out of a beautiful painting all day long. Gene Hill

If you can find some private land I’d bet you could hunt from utv. Check the regulations in the states your looking to hunt

South Dakota does not allow shooting from any vehicle or atv.

I don’t think Chet is wanting to shoot from the vehicle. Just follow the bird dogs

Correct, just ride to the find. I'm a couple of years beyond my youth and a hip surgery wont allow me to walk too much these days. Plan on going to the Dakotas and staying at trainers camp for a week and then try to hunt some on the way home.

Not on public land. Some states allow them for handicapped folks. I know of one handicapped hunter who took an atv to Montana. South Dakota has some specific laws for handicapped. (You can road hunt in SD--I believe argument was it would allow handicapped access.) There is of course, no shooting from vehicles or near buildings. It is kind of tricky tho cause some of those SD farmers drive very fast on the gravel.

I have never seen someone hunting off a four wheeler or UTV in SD (when I was going there) or Kansas or Nebraska. Thinking on why, and part of it is the noise of the engine could spook pheasant and maybe sharpies (a bad boy or some other battery powered up there would be pretty cool though), and the land is a lot of grain crops and CRP, which I think ranchers are particular about both of those being driven on. I would say best bet is off the beaten track in SD where someone has a big acreage of grass and might not care or an outfitter that would understand your scenario and has a good relationship with the landowner

No sir, you can't on public lands. You can on private, I believe.

Not in North Dakota. Public or private vehicles including atv/utv's are required to stay on established roads. There are some provisions for the transport of decoys in harvested crops on some areas for waterfowl hunters. No atv/utv's in CRP or prairie grass. Good old boot leather is required.

Chet--there is a lot of private land within the Pierre Grasslands. My guess is this can be hunted off an atv with owner's permission.

I'm hoping the folks I'm going up to work dogs with will have some ideas and be able to guide me in the right direction. If not, riding horse back behind some real good dogs for a week will have to hold me. Thanks for your help.

Beats the heck out of walking.... actually pretty enjoyable to me. Spent many a day horseback watching good dog work.

Chet is going after the prairie chicken. How does that bird react to the UTV?

I've hunted young chickens back in the day in eastern Kansas out of a pickup and much like working quail just have to park a little further away. But working young chickens is a blast. Hold fairly well and don't fly far so you can get a young dog on them several times. This is what we'll be doing when I go to watch my dogs being worked and this will be off horseback. Just hoping I can find an area to work my quail dogs on the way home.
