I would come nearer believing cougar mom killed calf for cubs than a Jaguarundi.

One got loose in my underwear one night. It was quite entertaining.

Hence the term "jaguarunderwear"...

Lots of interesting things up along the RedRiver. My family has owned land for generations in Clay County along the Red River. As a teenager and younger, we would trot line the tributaries along the Red and Wichita Rivers. We saw a lot of animals that were uncommon such as red stag, Aoudad, other species of deer that I'm still 100% positive what they were. We spotted a lot of cats that I still am not sure about either. My dad always told me:

"Son you never know what you'll see along the Red River, there's a lot of strange things that come out of Oklahoma"

There was a sighting in Hunt County, Google it, a lot claimed Black Panther, but a Biologist saw it and called it a Jaguarundi.... figured it was kept as a pet and released; same way we get alligators and big snakes around here too, think it was 2008 or 2009 north of Greenville, south of Wolfe City, in an area the old timers call Black Cat Thicket, since the 1800's

Had one cross my path at our family ranch about 10 years ago in Carrizo Springs, TX - Dimmit County. A good family friend of ours was a Ranch Manager at a couple of the big ranches just down the road, and he confirmed that he had seen two that same year (possibly the same one, twice). The one I saw crossed the road about 70 yards in front of me. I watched him for about 7-8 seconds. I was very familiar with what they looked like and it was without a doubt a Jaguarundi. That was my one and only time to see one in the wild.

About 2 years ago, my father had one cross in front of his car on the county road by our ranch, not 20 yards in front of him. He described it and I told him he might have seen one. He wasn't entirely sure, but when I showed him pics, he said, "That's it!" Two days later when leaving the ranch, he jumped what he figured was the same one on the edge of our property, just before that county road. He confirmed it was indeed a jaguarundi. None of us have seen one except for those encounters.

As STX mentioned, they are not very large. A 20lb one would be HUGE for a jaguarundi. Average is 8-16 lbs. And they are very solitary animals. The only time you'd seem multiple ones is just after they have given birth, or when they are mating.

There are more sightings along the Texas/Mexico border than anywhere else. As mentioned in an earlier post, there have been recovery efforts in the Rio Grande area to protect and preserve the species.

They are beautiful animals and if you have or ever see one in person, consider yourself very lucky!

suspect I saw one about a year and a half ago in SW Crockett county, it was too close to dark to tell for sure but looked like a dark colored miniature mountain lion. I started a thread asking what I might have seen back then.

the king ranch has cats that are radio collared... I THINK I saw one in a river bottom around swinney switch about 25 years ago. hunting in a blind and a cat walked out and sat down in the sendero for a couple minutes. I just kept thinking the entire time, "damn that's a big tom cat". I didn't even hear the word jagarundi until 10 years later. There are ocelots in those counties marked as well, but based on sightings I think those jagarundi's are not entirely uncommon close to refugio and beeville areas.

Awful lot of sighting for a near extinct cat with known populations only in Cameron and Willacy Co. I have hunted in the areas that FWS has the Jagurundi surveillance cams and fencing up but have never seen one.

Glocker, are you perhaps thinking about ocelots? The jaguarundis are much more widespread in range distribution, and the reports here are most consistent with known historic ranges up into the Hill Country.

Unless you see it kill the calf, I would suspect the kill being done by something else.

I've been around cattle my hole life and never had a house cat sized critter take out a calf. I've had yotes eat the back end off a cow while she was down calving and ate the calf too. Also had hawks/eagles eat the eyes out of a downed cow but never had anything but yotes and stray dogs run down calves actually more stray dogs than yotes. I've seen a cougar twice in my life on our place in STX and there's a few head of cattle on it but never lost a calf to one yet. Both times I saw the big cat was off a tractor and they don't stick around like a deer or yote will when your in a tractor. I'm sure its killed some deer, wish it would focus on pigs instead.

I talked to her and her brother this morning, they said that biologists have set up trail cams and are curious about what is killing the calves. She said they have lost 7 calves in the past month, so her and her brother contacted their ag extension agent and he was the one that got state biologists involved. Her brother said from the time they contacted the extension agent until the biologists arrived was less than 24 hrs. He said they seemed excited and extremely curious. They have flown over the ranch in a helicopter for a couple of days now, she seemed annoyed by it since they like to do it at first light and late in the evening and they keep waking up her 91yo mother.

My guess is they are possible looking for a bear or sasquatch. bolt

As a boy, young man, and adult my eyes have seen things that I cant explain. I have seen several deer that turned into stone, cactus, or bushes with the rising sun and a fleeting glimpse is little better than darkness. I think the best answer for most of the people who saw a... black panther, jaguarondi, etc. is "I don't know what I saw, but I think it was something".
