We have decided to go full-time 5th wheel living after my son graduates in May. This will mean some obvious downsizing.
Two of my carry guns are 9mm and the other is 357/38, do I doubt I'll be getting rid of those rounds. However, My 45acp pistols are really just target and range guns.
Would I be crazy to get rid of my 3 45s and all the ammo? I could put them in long-term storage, but don't really like that idea much.

Is there a family member you could leave them with? Sibling or parent, perhaps? Can you leave a firearm in a safety deposit box?

Handguns don't take up much space. Lose some dishes, womens shoes or something along those lines.

I know they are fun but hard to CC unless yhey are small like a XDs .45ACP . If you sell or trade off any and want a CCW take s good look at Taurus Spectrum that is new and just coming out . It’s a .380 , has the easiest take down of all pistols on the market . Getting reaaly good reviews !! Perfect for CC . One of the best winners Taurus has come out with and very affordable !!

Not sure that I need three, but they are all sort of different. The Sig 1911 Ultra could be carried, I just don't. The P227 and FNP-45 dang sure couldn't be carried. As to a .380, no thanks. As far as the size of the pistols, it's not really a problem. It's more about the weight and space of the ammo.

This. I recommend giving it some time before you get rid of any. Now that you have more time to shoot, see if you take advantage of it. You could cut back on the amount of ammo you keep on hand. If you find your just lugging them around, sell them.

Are you going to stop going to the range after you move into the 5th wheel? I’d keep the range guns and cut it down to 1 carry gun. No practical reason to have 3 carry guns other than you just like them.

No practical reason to have 3 carry guns other than you just like them. It's not really that. I keep an LCR for pocket carry. I generally only pocket carry in shorts or times when I'm not wearing a belt. My P938 is my general carry IWB. However, I would never pocket carry it. A P320 Compact is my OWB carry, but sometimes IWB when wearing cool-weather clothing.

I’m a pocket carry all day every day guy. If my lcp is good enough in the summer, it’s good enough in the winter, but different strokes for different folks.

I'd sell the 45's, you can always rebuy them later.
Or find a friend who will keep them in their safe.

Sell or store the ammo and hold onto the guns.

I would keep the Sig Ultra since it's a single stack and meets magazine restrictions in those weird states.

Consider magazine capacity restrictions and the law of the states you will visit choosing. I wouldn’t. They aren’t going to search his 5th wheel when he enters the states. Just don’t take those to the range in that state.

I would take at least 1 or 2 of the 45's and have them strategically placed or hidden in your camper just in case a bad guy decides to come in your camper and wants to do some evil things to you. You can show them the light of heaven or hell with a 45. I like the idea of having a round that will kill or incapacitate someone with one shot. I also hate the idea of selling guns unless you are trying to upgrade.
Keep em hide em and have them ready because you never know!

Keep em hide em and have them ready because you never know! What an antiquated line of thinking. The .45 is good, sure. But this isn’t 1965. Modern defensive ammo makes it only marginally better.

Its basically gonna come down to determining need vs want. Do you need the 45's? It sounds as if you're set on keeping the carry guns. Will it be practical for you to keep the range guns and all of the ammo for them? They are replaceable as is the ammo. At a minimum pick one of the range guns to stash away and keep a portion of the ammo, replenish rounds as needed.

Modern defensive ammo makes it only marginally better. 45 ACP improved as much as 9mm and so with identical bullets will still provide a bigger wound with more energy, but bullet selection and shot placement will matter more than anything. Very interesting comparisons here: https://www.luckygunner.com/labs/self-defense-ammo-ballistic-tests/ Yes, but the 9mm and .40 are no longer anemic like they used to be. They are now more than capable self defense rounds. A .500 s&w will provide more energy and a bigger hole too. My point isn’t that a .45 isn’t a great round, but that any of his 3 carry weapons would be more than capable as a defensive weapon, and that keeping around a .45 only for that reason wouldn’t be enough reason for me to keep it around.

Whatever a person shoots most accurately under extreme stress, and will actually carry, is always the most important criteria even if it is just a 380. Most civilian self-defense engagements involve just over 3 shots on average from the last study I saw - those are civilians, not law enforcement or the Battle of the Bulge. The key is to make them go where it counts. The 9 vs. 45 certainly is worthy of its own thread and there have been many, many, many through the years, even here.
