Stand and fill feeder with a steel guard around the timer works great, won't even need a feeder pin. That's the route I went, work great!

I just put trampoline frames around the feeders and staked them down with T-posts. Had to put a self-tapping screw in each joint, but it keeps all the big cows out of the feeder area and allows the deer and pigs to get in. AND they are usually free on Craigs List!

I was born and raised on cattle ranch.

Still live on one and raise a few cattle for sale and yearly beef supply.

I also manage wildlife for family members that hunt deer, turkeys, occasional pig, etc.
These days I only hunt pigs, mostly under feeders.

I quit using fences 4-5 years ago and figured out how to securely stake my feeder legs to prevent cow damage.
Simply put your feeder up to use as a guide, then place a T-post parallel and alongside the feeder leg and drive it into the ground and tie the feeder leg to the feeder in 3 places with heavy wire.

When the cows get under feeder legs, they are usually rubbing their backs to scratch grubs, fly bites, etc. and push the legs apart.
With the t-post on same angle as the leg, it's hard if not impossible for the cows to spread the legs - I haven't lost ANY feeders since I started staking them like this.

This cheap plastic feeder has been standing for 5 years with cows around it for 6 months out of each year so it can be done - notice legs parallel to t-posts and tied securely.

Cheers,

I've fought with those bovines for years but can't get rid of them AND wanted my feeders to stay standing.
Tried many different pen and leg staking methods and picked up quite a few feeders off the ground over the years too.

If that post/pic helps one hunter save one feeder it's worth it!

I've been fighting with a neighbor's cow for a while now. She got through the fence somehow and is in the dense woods around my feeders, and eats a lot of corn. I was within about 20 ft. of her the other day and fired 4 rds of 9mm underneath her, after which she ran maybe 30 ft. the other way and came right back.
We told the neighbor she isn't going to survive if he doesn't get her out of there, and I'm serious about it !

Hog panels with barbed wire strung from t post to t post. Otherwise, the cows lean on the hog panels. Over time, the hog panels fail.

This will work. Eventually they will give up. Did this with my PF pen and removed the barbed wire after a year.

We have been there for 6 years. The barbed wire failed this year and they pushed it in.

The rancher rotates cattle, so every year the cattle are new. I assume you are correct if the cattle are the same.

I have dealt with stubborn cows on one lease for 5 years. No matter what we tried, they always found some way to get to our feeders. If I seen a cow at the lease I'm at now, I would sh** bricks cause there ain't a ranch for miles...I like it that way...just big east Texas woods.

MY wife is so tired of hearing me complain about the cows breaking through the fence and gettting at the feeder. I showed her your pic, and I said, "...at least I don't have it this bad!" We both got a laugh out of it. I feel your pain brother. I think if it got that bad at my place, I'd be eating a lot of steak, and my neighbor would be eating the cost of a lot of cows!
