Looking at buying a pre-owned unit. It will be used primarily for hogs and varmints. Any users please let me know, GOOD OR BAD, on how this unit performs. Any info. on effective range of the unit, spotting animals and being able to distinguish a species as well as effective ranges for a shot at a target animal. Let’s hear it and thanks for any input provided.

That model is a 75 yard scope, sorry but the contrast and imagery just never showed well when I used them. Here was a review done side by side with other comparable scopes of that era https://www.ar15.com/forums/Industry/REV...iew/646-250583/

Notice they never updated the thread with Flir RS32 videos , that should say a lot without having to state it explicitly ...
Don’t get me wrong if you can buy a working unit for 1k or less , do it !

That model is a 75 yard scope, I highly disagree. I own an RS32 and have made shots on rabbits out to 150 yards with a 300 blk out. We also have another RS32 1-5 mounted on a 6.8 SPC and we have taken pigs at over 200 yards with it. Unless you have a rifle that is only a 75 yard capable. Sure, the RS 32 is not as good as some of the higher end units, but for the money, it's a good scope.

In all fairness, it's not usually a plus.

Not sure it fair to say that it sucks. It would be fair to say it not very good compared to a 9k ird mk3. But I doubt he’s paying 9k for the used unit . I had one a couple years ago, it got the job done, and beats the hell out of a red light. If price is acceptable to you, go for it.

I don’t think it is generally a great thing when a company releases their product and then buys another company’s design/software in lieu of improving the product
We’re all entitled to chip in on the topic and the OP can weigh it all out and make a choice....
Thus far I give it 1 out of 5 stars
A couple of you are in the 3-4 star Range
So I think that’s a fair overall rating that fits “it’s an average product” which has been discontinued or is being totally reworked, however you want to look at that...

Well I hope FLIR doesn't suck. I just purchased the new PTS233. It was at the top end of my budget I had to spend. The FLIR had better options than the Core, better reviews than the ATN and had it was recommended over the Core and Thor by other board members.

I'm assuming Popper was referring to FLIR buying Armasight and I think there's more Armasight in your scope than FLIR. If no one announces anything new at SHOT really interesting, I'm going to buy a PTS233 for my RFB. Hopefully we won't both end up with scopes that suck.

Guys the new FLIR Pro models PTS XXX are not the same scope we are talking about here, sorry if that was confusing but I am speaking strictly of performance on the older Thermosight - R scopes.
I look forward to hearing how the new PTS line runs - seems to be a lot of value for the money and if the combination of Armasight and FLIR tech works well I'm sure you'll both be very happy!

I am speaking strictly of performance on the older Thermosight - R scopes. Which model, specifically? Because there is a BIG difference in price point and quality from the RS24 model to the RS32 to the RS64. I have looked through the RS64 and was highly impressed. But it's a $6000 thermal scope. The RS32 models are the middle of the pack, and work very well for the price point. When the FLIR RS models came out, they were the one of the only thermal scopes in a decent price point. I have used the RS32 model for a few years now, and it works great. http://www.flir.com/thermoSightR-Series/

I don't see the point is buying any of the RS line unless at a steep discount. Go Pulsar for the same money or less. Plus the new Flir entry line a better product for the money then the old ones.
Now if you can get an old FLir for 1k or so then go for it. I bought a crappy Armasight last year before Pulsar and Flir came out with new products for 2k and am happy with it. No way I'd pay that for it now.

For the weekend? You're basing this on using it for the weekend. Interesting.

I didn’t have to buy it to realize it wasn’t for me There is no FLIR bashing going on here, I’d seriously say the new pro line Arma/Flirs could be he best of the bunch for value vs performance Some current owners looking to upgrade will probably be looking to sale their RS32s, some will be more motivated than others...... Pricing of those older models is anybodies best guess but with the new crop of entry thermals (core and pts233) it sure sets a ceiling quickly Good luck OP on getting a deal and GLWS Chad
