There's a thread about a dropped Leupold that got me thinking. How many of us are the old fashioned sight-in and guesstimate drop or not shoot past a certain distance? how many are of the zero, range, set turrets/holdovers for drop/wind and shoot out to whatever distance they're comfortable with?
It's only been (2 years in JAN) since my dad and I switched over from the old school way to the newer methodology. I've had a turreted scope since 2011 and we were all disappointed that the knobs were exposed when it first came in. Now it's a blessing to take most of the guess work out of shots further than the 100yd zero.
Also the poll title, if you noticed it, is just in fun. No harm meant or any superiority or inferiority implied. We're all hunters here and we're all on the same side. Additionally, I'm sure that the dialing in method isn't all that new school, but we're talking specifically in hunting scenarios here, not military or target shooting.
Edit: i forgot to include BDC type reticles, but they are really just a modification to the old school method.

I can't vote. The situation dictates what I do, dial or hold.
The last few weeks have gone like this:
Hog at 224, hold Hog at 20, hold Sounder of hogs 488, dial Coyote at 300, hold Hog at 648, dial Hog at 750, dial

You are in the dial in category. People in the first do not posses the ability to range/dial, don't make it harder than it is.

Same. I prefer to dial but when I only have seconds and can't range, I just use MPBR. The last axis I shot, I saw while riding in the mule. He was running up a hill when I rounded a corner. I knew he was within 300 yards so I put it on his shoulder and dropped him. Ranged the shot at 190 afterward.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Those that are saying they can't vote: do you use tactical scopes and milling reticles or capped scopes with duplex or BDC reticles?

When you consider that the largest amount of hunting is from a blind, basically 100 yards. Set and forget will do for almost all hunters and hardly ever a reason to change. I have a Burris XTRII and can shoot it really good. I have taken it hunting and never dialed it once.

I'm new to the nikon bdc. Love it so far. Will get more range time in to make sure the ballistics/hold on their website is correct. If its accurate, then will be ideal hunting scope.

I have or have access to seven center-fire rifles. Currently 3 are dial, 4 are set/forget. Moving towards dial on all, eventually.

I have a Burris XTRII and can shoot it really good. I have taken it hunting and never dialed it once. Very true. Even longer range safari style hunting seldom reaches past 300yd, which is doable without dialing. I don't shoot that well but I've also never dialed. But I also don't shoot very far because the need doesn't arise.

I kind of mix old and new......I sight in for dead on at 250yds.
Hold over out to 350 and then dial up over that.
Longest deer shot has been 490yds and a few hogs longer than that.

Im in the same boat as FiremanJG. It all depends on the situation, I can either dial or hold. I use mil/mil scopes on everything but my big guns where I use then MOAR-T reticles from nightforce.

I sight all of my hunting rifles in at 300 yards. I have found in most cases that you can get within 300 if there is any cover. I shoot a 257wby mainly so out to 400 is still a very doable shot.

I sight in at 200 dead on. At 300 it's 5" low and at 400 it's 14" low. I just hold a little high, no dialing.

Mostly I just hold, since i’m ‘On’ at 200 yards and rarely shoot past 300. I’ll dial to 500, which is where I run out of pasture.

2.5" high at 100 and forget it....... This, run a 25-06 pushing a 115 grain over 3000 fps and hunt East Texas so anything under 300 yards I am good. Can't see any farther than that where I hunt anyway.

All I use, for every rifle shot is Mil/Mil scopes. Yes, but from the ops post my thoughts are that you are "new school". Your "hold" is not with a traditional scope but with one of them new fangle scopes. So although you can say, correctly, that you hold, your hold isn't like the hold I think he was talking about. That being said, I've never shot game far enough out to dial because of where I've hunted but I have the scope/s to dial when needed which I will do beyond 150.
