Went out to the freezer chest in the garage to grab some elk meat for chili tonight since we are enjoying some cooler temps the last few days. Noticed a stench when I opened it. Realized the bottom of the freezer was covered with a frozen gelatinous blood mixture. Apparently either the freezer got unplugged by one of my kids, or while we were away the electricity went out. Not sure when either occurred or how long ago it was but lost nearly a whole elk, and 3 deer from last year. Really not looking forward to cleaning this out tomorrow. We pulled any loose pieces of frozen meat out that we could dislodge. The rest is frozen into the blood/ice mixture. My thought was, unplug it tonight and leave the lid closed. Check on it in the morning and if still frozen add some rock salt to help speed up the melting process. Then try and take out large chunks of ice before it turns into a warm hot stinky bloody mess. Then drag the freezer out to the alley and hose that sucker out (I am sure the neighbors are gonna love this). Wash the inside with half water/half vinegar and some dawn. Repeat multiple times and then let air dry. Anyone suggest I do something different regarding the cleaning process? I welcome any input. The only good thing that came out of this was from the wife: "I guess you better shoot some more animals this year then"! DONE

Clean out is going to suck. Once you get it back operational invest in a freezer alarm. They are cheap insurance against problems like this. Mine saved me more than once on a GFI circuit that would get tripped in my garage.

I recently went through a similar experience. I had to go out of town for 5 days and my wife called and said one of our freezers quit (I have two in the garage). She cleaned up the mess and a kind neighbor hauled all the defrosted mess to a dumpster for her. When I got home I checked the other freezer and it was defrosted also and starting to get ripe. I had to get it emptied and cleaned out too. Finally figured out what happened to cause all this. A couple days before I left on that trip, I was using an air compressor to fill some tires on my old hunting pickup....and it blew an electrical breaker!..apparently near the end of the compressor use and I didn't notice it. I lost at least a couple deer along with loads of other stuff. My wife said she is going hunting with me this year to get another deer herself...she misses it that bad! She has never hunted before so it should be interesting.

My buddy's mom left fish in my freezer at the property 2 weeks later I find that the trailer electricity was out. I reset all the breakers filled the freezer with Clorox, and pine-o-pine then let it freeze up again. removed the big stinky block of funk and filled the freezer with pine-o-pine and Clorox again and left it for a week. When I came back I froze it all and I just removed the frozen mixture and put some baking soda in there. Cleared up the smell pretty good. Make sure you have plenty of ventilation if you plan on hanging around.
Sometimes it's hard being me! But somebody has to do it.

Had this happen to me a while back. I ended up tossing the whole freezer and just buying a new one. Could never get the smell all the way out.
Definitely get a freezer alarm! Has saved us a couple times since.

happened to my daughter/SIL after Harvey. GFI outlet in the garage tripped, lost everything including a packer brisket and 4-5 racks of ribs plus all the venison. Wife helped with clean up, turned it on its side, hosed it all out, Clorox and water several times, let dry, plugged back in with an open container of baking soda, replace baking soda every day for 3-4 days seems like new.

Very sorry this happened to you guys!
Before you fill it (or a new one) back up, get an electrician out there and have him add a dedicated, non-GFI circuit/breaker/plug. That's what I finally did.
The alarm sounds like an excellent idea. Plus, I bought several cheap fridge/freezer thermometers and look at each when I'm opening that one.

I can smell that right now makes me want to puke. That happened to a friend of mine this past year, his deer was up at friends of his place where he had the deer processed. He got to "busy" to go pick it up at it got processed and he got a call a few months later they found the freezer went out. Then by the time they found out it was too late.
That's one of the reasons why I like to have everything vacuum packed, so if they day ever comes the clean up won't be so bloody.

Dang sorry to hear that. Bleach it and let it sit in open air for a few weeks maybe. I learned a long time ago to keep moving the game into the home freezer. My wife always does inventory before heading to the grocery store. I she sees the meat in the house freeze she uses it. We burn through 5 deer every year we'll before season starts. That saves lots of money and utilizes everything. I just say that cause you had 3deer still in your freezer. That's way too much for September in my opinion. It's a bigger issue then your recent loss. It's so nice to start your season with an empty freezer

I have been volunteering in Houston and Beaumont mucking houses. That is what the neighborhoods smell like that were flooded. Last people we helped had 80lbs. of shrimp rotting in a freezer on the curb. It is a terrible smell!!

Put a can of unbrewed coffee in the freezer and close it back up for a week. That will take the smell out of the freezer.........

Some great ideas guys. I totally blame myself. The freezer has become a storage shelf for other crap (coolers mainly) and we had so much game meat in the inside freezer that we weren't in it as much as we needed to be obviously. The freezer alarm will be a must in the future as well as a backbup generator for the home if I can ever get around to building.. I dread what's about to go down. It's gonna be terrible. I may not be able to eat game for a while after this. Hope that's not the case. Worse case scenario, I might have to scrap the cleanup idea and chunk it. Time will tell. Here goes nothing....

After a couple of those, we added a freezer alarm that notifies us if it exceeds the limits we setup. It works great.

I actually used it and feel it will be beneficial. However, the above comment is unfounded and inappropriate. Even if you really knew me, my family, our lifestyle, uses, diet etc. etc. it still wouldn't be appropriate. I won't say a word more about this. Thank you sir!

Sorry to hear. Happened to plenty of friends.
What brand of freezer alarm is that with the wifi? Does it notify you anywhere? I have a detached garage but should reach the router. My Kenmore is 14 years old and still going fingers crossed.

I lost around 50 lbs of ground venison in Harvey. Sucks, but that's basically all I lost so I'm one of the ultra-lucky ones.

That's a LaCross brand ought on Amazon. It'll work via wifi through several walls but I did not test the range. If your phone sees wifi it should work there. If a wifi extender is needed, justify that cost against the cost of lost meat.
