Probably been asked a million times, but here it goes... I am wanting a full-size traditional/classic 1911. Nothing too fancy. Probably in 9mm. I've been looking at Colt Competition and Springfield Range Officer. Thoughts?

I really like my Ruger 1911, I have the stainless in commander length. Perfect size I think. They're 70 series (traditional). Great bang for the buck. I've owned 2 RIA's and Springfield and shot/carried/cleaned by buddies kimber. Only one I've kept is the Ruger.

I have shot that Ruger. Very nice pistol for sure. Smoother than an R1 for sure from my experience.

You can't go wrong with Ruger or Colt or any Springfield Load/RO/etc. The lower-end Springfields aren't very good, but any of the mid/upper level models are fantastic.
If you want 9mm, that rules out Ruger. But in 45, Ruger is your best bang for the buck. Colt makes a nicer finish and trigger, but I think Springfield might make overall better components in their mid-level pistols than what Colt puts in their similarly-priced guns. Once you get to the higher end stuff, it's all nice.
I have a stainless Colt S80 that I'm very, very happy with. I think the first owner had some trigger work done because mine is just about perfectly crisp and light.

If you can save up longer and get a Dan Wesson the wait will be worth it.

Didn't realize that. I thought they were 45-only. Personally, I never saw the attraction in getting a 1911 in anything other than 45, but that's just me. To each their own.

I would go with the Colt. I have many 1911s. 9mm is very sweet to shoot.
I have 9mm, 10mm, 45, and .22lr. In Kimber, Colt, and S&W.
They are all nice to shoot. You really can't go wrong with any of the makers mentioned. When you get under the mid 600 price point, your trigger and felt recoil are gonna be where the difference is felt.

Back when all I shot was 9mm and wanted to keep all my ammo consolidated I got the 2 RIA 1911's one officer and one government size. When they shot they were a pleasure to shoot, but neither would feed 115gr FMJ or HP. They would feed 124gr pretty decent, but I sold them from my OCD of not being able to trust a gun and the officer size was supposed to be my carry gun so I didn't trust them to go bang everytime. Of course these were the RIA Tactical models pretty much the cheapest 9mm 1911's I could find. This could have been the issue, but others seem to love RIA. I would go with the Colt. I have many 1911s. 9mm is very sweet to shoot.

9mm out of a 1911 is awesome to shoot, I forgot I did have one of the older S&W PD fullsize in 45. It was pretty sweet to, the finish on it wasn't great, but it shot well. Can't remember what I sold/traded it for.

Low recoil, faster target re-acquisition, higher magazine capacity. I dont have one, but I want one for those reasons. I love the platform, and think a 9mm in it would be terribly fun to shoot.

I get that the M1 is 100% historical at this point and the 1911 is still a modern firearm due to the wonderful design, but it just seems hard for me to stomach it. Maybe one of these days I'll have a chance to shoot one in 9mm and get over my stigma. I imagine it would be really fantastic to shoot one. 9mm with that design would be really tame and accurate all at the same time.

My heart says .45 my head says 9mm. I have zero experience with handguns. Not sure I've ever even fired a 9mm much less a .45

The "Ultimate 1911" for me is one chambered in 10mm. Love the pistol, and that cartridge cannot be ignored.

Look at the Springfield Range officer, comes in 9mm and .45.

Probably more than you want to spend, but Nighthawk Customs makes a badarse 1911 9mm called the T5. I have two of their .45s and they are the finest 1911's I've ever shot.

Consider a Commander size side if you're going to buy it in 9MM. I bought a RO 5" in 9mm and while it cycled reliably, I could feel the slide impulse back and forward. Just not enough oomph in a FMJ type 9mm round to move the mass of a 5" slide fast. I do not have that problem with any Commander size 9mm model I've ever shot.

Sounds like a recoil spring weight issue. OP, it's pretty hard to go wrong with any of the name brand 1911's out there today. I'd also suggest you look into the Rock Island pistols as well. Find one that has the features you want and fits your budget, and buy it.
