I'll post up a few known age bucks. That's a 3 yr old and a 6 yr old. Note the 'pot belly' on the young buck.

The old deer is only 17" inside. Who needs spread when you have beams, tine length and mass?

And just to be fair, the deer that was in the original post was nothing compared to your 3yo horse there....

1st photo up top. Only buck in the bunch I can't age. Think he's 3? Cull, regardless. 2nd buck is 2 and going to be BIG if he survives to maturity. 3rd and 4th photos are of a 5 yr old 8 point. Cull. 5th pic is a cool 3 yr old. 6th and 7th are of the same buck. He'll fool most folks. How old is he? 8th and last is the buck above's Daddy. He's 3. Still think you can accurately age deer by photos, alone?

Not fair putting those up there fouzman, those aren't LF native Texas deer Nope, they're high fence native Texas deer. Awfully hard to compare LF deer eating mostly native forbes vs. HF deer eating protein year round. Like comparing bodies of a bodybuilder vs a plumber, Lol.

I recognize three age categories.
1 - The spots are gone; very very tender. 2 - At least a year, no belly sag, smooth neck/brisket line; mighty fine eating. 3 - Probably past three years, belly sag, pronounced brisket; lots of sausage.

It is not a fair comparison but still shows some Mighty fine bucks. I like looking at HF deer, but they don't equate to low fence deer in body size for sure.

Ha, I like the way you think. As do I! Posted for body comparison of known age bucks in prime health, only. By the way, the son (pics 6 and 7) of the three yr old cull is a yearling, 2 max. Roman nose, thick body. Just goes to show how hard it is to judge deer from photos. Hope everyone has a great season

Not fair putting those up there fouzman, those aren't LF native Texas deer Nope, they're high fence native Texas deer. I think the point was that the main factor in any deer's growth is its food supply. Year over year, a buck in that environment is going to be stacking nutrition vs one that is barely getting enough to get by running all day for an (often times) thin supply of native browse. Just like most Americans with their full fridges and pantries that sit on their asses watching TV vs a guy that lives in Africa that's running 20 miles to exhaust an antelope before spearing it for his only meal of the week. Even at identical ages, one is a monsterous lard [censored] and one is built like a gazelle.

I like big 8's so we gave him one more year. He's about like last year, so he goes on the hit list this year.

Great looking bucks. The buck with the Roman nose whose Dad is only 3 would have fooled me big time!
