It looks like many folks over here in Young county have their dove fields shredded already. I'm not seeing as many as I did last year from the road. I drove over to Knox City this morning and it didn't seem like there were many birds in the air over the fields by Throckmorton, Seymour, or Munday. What are y'all seeing out there?

I've started seeing increased numbers but not much. Nothing like recent past years.

I usually see tons of birds crossing my area but this year not near as many. They must be waiting on the storm to pass.

Speaking for Knox & Baylor .. it seems our birds got pushed out with cool front a couple weeks ago.. was thinking we would have fresh birds riding ahead of this front but no such luck.. a little concerned .. hope they will be here soon ...

About as many birds as I've ever seen here south of Breckenridge. We've missed all the rain the past couple of weeks and our fields have stayed dry. All the power lines around here look like this in the mornings.

Anyone seeing any around Hamilton or Evant? Last year there were't many due to early spring crops getting flooded out

Breckenridge this morning, their still here. Went to Albany to pick of feed and a lot of the fields over there are standing in water. They got a lot more rain than I have the past couple of weeks. These pics were taken this morning at my driveway.

Texas Parks and Wildlife replied to my e=mail asking about Dove Hunting this year. They said not to expect a very good year and that Harvey has virtually guaranteed a poor season. There may be a few exception areas in North Texas and the Panhandle.

I had to go to Snyder today. I saw the most dove on fields north of Rule. Did not see many West or east of there. I have been seeing some white wings coming over my place in Young county.

Well, maybe that's a good sign for me.. I will be just west and north of Stamford.... I guess in the end, the reports don't matter too much, because I'm going no matter what! LOL. But at least you're seeing some birds. Thanks for the continued updates. Appreciate it.

Been real cool here the past few mornings, was 58 this morning. I believe it has moved a few birds south with the north wind we've had the past few days. Still birds here but doesn't seem to be as many.

5 days ago we were stacked up with tons of birds and then yesterday..poof they are gone. We still have a few around to shoot at but not like it was. Shredded more yesterday to hopefully help by putting some more seed on the ground.

Seen more this year so far in Wise county than I recall the past couple years at this time, even a few WW that I usually see more of in late November.

They've been mocking me all month sitting heavy in town. My spot just outside of town has had quite a few flying when I've gotten to go out and check it. So far it looks ok here in Burleson.

I'm afraid there'll be some disappointed hunters if the sky's look like they do at my place in Young county tonight. Not a dove in the sky.over my tank.

I did see a few dove off of 576 south of Breckinridge this morning. Saw more the closer to Cisco I got. There was a good flight of white wings that landed at the cemetery where I make a pit stop.

But that's the good thing about dove hunting there can be none one day and loaded up the next.

Brenham TX area, a bust for today. have place 10 mile northwest of town near Somerville. was a few birds around couple weeks ago, but since rain event of past week sour grapes!
maybe a new dry norther may shift doves around.

have plenty of hummingbirds hanging around the barn, soon they will go south.

We hunted Farmersville this morning. I counted 5-6 out of range. Shooting around us picked up some, but not much.

easy limits north of Stamford.. Still spots avaialble with Jackie Webb. 940-521-1110. He's not an outfitter, just a farmer with some cut wheat.

Usually here in texas during august is dry, hot very little rain here, birds flock to watering holes in morning, and evening prior to roost. They go where there is food, otherwise they migrate away. This summer has been an exception, started off dry, but then we had on and off again rains here in central tx.
My neighbors small sun flower patch is taken over by large stand of weeds of small rains we had about a month ago. Now with harvey blasting in here, high winds and rain, believe is just moved birds down south.
Going to San Angelo next week, maybe a few birds in that region, ag cuttings of crops has started, so thats in our favor, and i hear this week we are having a first good norther, no cold front, but a major shift in weather patterns to maybe our 102deg days are gone?

Parks and Wildlife said it would be an off year on home birds.
Guess they know something.

Good on those that had plenty - and for the rest, it's a long season.

South Taylor county had a decent number of birds. It wasn't as crazy as it has been in the past but we had enough for about 10 hunters to shoot at birds and you could get a Limit if you were shooting well.

Numbers definitely dwindled the last week before opening day.

Didn't many birds at all at our hunting lease in Montague. Guys north on a wheat field shot a lot. Back in the drought, we had 100's but not anymore with food and water everywhere I guess. Killed 2 rattlesnakes in camp right after dark! Never seen them in camp. Guess they were watching football on the TV.

Buddy was on his annual hunt around Coleman and said it was slowest in years.

Hamlin area had decent numbers of birds
4 in our party, 2 limited out, the others not too shabby

We were so lucky, yesterday a storm came up to the north and pushed a wall of birds right at us. They tried to over run us, be we fought back and held our position

20 guests all shot limits last three days.
Had fun but was ready for them to leave. Tired and need a rest.

Hunted east of Breckenridge yesterday morning and it was a total bust. Only saw two birds. Other folks on the property were blasting away so I guess all the birds were over there. Hoping next weekend goes better.

Went out to the farm we have access to outside of Lockhart right of 130. No birds flying to speak of, not a lot of food sources there but it's been better in years past. Oh well, at least the BBQ was good.

Yesterday the evening hunt was much better than morning on our lease. Ended up with a good handful of birds and a lot of laughs.

They really started flying right at 7:15 which provided 30 min of quick shooting. Ended up with two doubles which was a first for me!

I hunt with chesterc, and it was slow where we are. We hunt near Caddo, TX, east of Breckenridge. Hoping this cold front coming on Tuesday will bring some birds with it!!!

Look at the top of that truck (the lights), it's the wardens truck. He already counted birds and gave the ok to pile them.

Yes, he stopped by just as the hunt was winding down. We're very lucky to have a guy like Cliff here in Stephens County.

Yep, one of the best younger GW's out here. Congrats on the harvest. Our dove lease is east of you outside Graford - not many birds out this way but only 35 minutes from the house so can't complain!

Had an absolutely fabulous hunt with Double Barrel Outfitters out of Coleman. 2 days hunting, everyone got limits, including myself. Both days. They feed us great, catfish first night, steak second night. Employees & their families were great. Never been called sir so much in my life. Definetly put us on birds.

Took a four day weekend to hunt in Red River County, usual tradition. Saw very few birds. Out two of us hunting 3days only took 7 total. Maybe in a few weeks we'll try it again, or maybe not.

Hunt 4 days in a row: 1st morning got limit; 2nd morning got 7; 3rd afternoon got 1; 4th morning got 2. I think I could forget dove for a while. May check out few weeks later. Btw, I hunted at public land.

Went Friday afternoon just west of Gatesville. Hit the field about 3:00 and thought I swas going to melt. 95 degrees, zero wind and set up looking towards the west so no shade. But I had hunted here before and had a pretty good idea of where to set up. I limited in about 2 hours, then went looking for shade and cold beer. Saturday afternoon we went to a different spot about 10 miles up the road that I had never hunted before. Took a guess on where to set up and it didn't work out too well. Got 10 and lost a couple in the overgrown sunflower field. Most of the crew limited. Also got a nice dose of chiggers for my efforts. Went back to that same field Sunday afternoon but we only had 3 hunters. Didn't see nearly as many birds, but I got to sit in the shade and still got 10 on a very leisurely hunt. Decided to give it a rest on Monday and didn't hunt. All in all a pretty good weekend. Killed a few birds, saw a lot of old friends from out of town, drank mucho cold ones and ate like a king.

Hunted Fri morning around Snyder. Less doves than normal but most of the 5 of us limited. I wasn't on the best spot in the field but made it work. I noticed after the hunt that I went through exactly a box of shells for my limit. We had quail around us all over the place. The land owner has done a lot to the habitat and you could see the results. Was awesome to hear and see.

Headed to our lease Fri afternoon around Seymour. Didn't see much flying so we had low expectations for the next morning. Headed to the "dove pond" Saturday morning slightly tired and dehydrated thanks to beer, college football, and no need to hunt Fri afternoon... and it started slow. Around 8 am we got a nice surprise - the draw that the pond is in a white wing flyway. Waves of them coming from town to the fields on the other side of us. Ended up getting a limit of 14 WW and 1 mourning but I admit it took way over a box of shells to get there. Sunday morning the pattern shifted. They got smart, maybe someone was hammering them wherever they were going, or something. Only got a handful, but had a great weekend with my son.

Hunted a couple of hours this morning thinking the cool front would have them flying. I only seen one, this is my usual dove spot in northeast Tx. Worst start of a season we have had so far, most of the time we can't reload fast enough. Idk.

Stil not seeing many dove. Drove from Graham to Knox City this morning and didn't see many on any of the fields. I did see more white wings flying over my tank last night than I've been seeing.

Hope y'all got some good shooting opening day. I traveled to Bates County Missouri to hunt with my 3 brothers and 2 nephews. It was disappointing this year. Farmers haven't started cutting silage or shelling corn because it has been too wet up there this year. The growing season was delayed because of wet weather this spring. Some of the corn was still green. We did find one farmer that had cut one section of corn and we hunted that field for two days. 6 guns shot 24 birds over 3 days. Got checked by the game warden there. He concurred that the doves haven't started their migration yet. However a strong cold front yesterday morning dropped the morning temp to 48 degrees. Hopefully that will get the migration moving. I'm going to Ponder this weekend to check out a place a buddy found up there. Wish me luck!

The child tells what he got for Christmas, the mature man tells how he spent the day, the immature hunter tells how many birds he shot, the mature gunner tells of the experience. -George Bird Evans

Took a drive this morning, birds are thin here after the front, hopefully more push in but I doubt it with this south wind. Looks like it may be thin here till we get another front.

Note: This is the strangest year I seen in a while for Doves. Harvey pushed a few south when the north wind was blowing, and now a decent front after the opener has pushed more out and not pushed anything in. Can't remember getting down to 53 in the mornings this early in season. Going to be interesting to see what the rest of season holds.

More birds than I thought there were going to be. No limits but the guys got a little shooting in. Biggest group I saw was about 20 birds, most were two's and three's. Come on next cold front.

Still slow up in Palo Pinto county. I think the birds are there but no pressure. Everybody showed up last Friday and Saturday and I was all alone in a big sunflower field. It was still nice - 55 degrees at sunrise, heck of alot better than doing chores at the casa!

Real slow and I mean slow in Woodson. Shot 5 times. 3 birds. One shot was stupid. 150 yards away. I was just mad and said here goes. I missed. Saw about 15-20 birds all morning. Buster was not happy.

Best number this morning was 11 but most guys only had 4 to 8. They got a little shooting in. Definitely below average for second weekend.

I had a few weak hunts around Waco. (Lots of birds in some areas around Waco. It's just spotty. You're trying to catch the white wings feeding, more or less, and I haven't had a good grain field this year.)

But we smacked the dove out in Edwards County last weekend. Old school mourning dove shoot over a gravel tank. Lots of native birds coming in hot and heavy right at dark both Friday and Saturday nights.

Got real slow here Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning. Just got back from cutting more strips for the guys this weekend. Hopefully some push in otherwise it's going to be a slow hunt. Talked to GW yesterday and he said it was slow all over the county. Sure need a cool front to push more in.

Just talked to some guys who hunted Sabinal, they said it sucked down there too. I saw 11 birds 2nd weekend and got 7 south of Waco. Last year same place me and my son both limited out in 2 hours. He was just a beginner but lots of birds were flying.

My wife and I hunted with Brad Mullen from Texasdove.net Saturday morning at a field in Woodson. We were covered in doves. I limited early and wife got 9 in the morning. We went to another field in the evening where she finished her limit. Hunted with Brad's partner Josh near Throckmorton on Sunday morning. Didn't have the same crazy numbers of birds Sunday morning at the Throckmorton field but it was steady enough to allow me to limit by 9:00 AM.

I have never hunted at Stompy's place, but I hope to some day. For a man who has a commercial interest in selling dove hunts, it is great to see his honest reports.

We hunted in Jones County last two weekends near Noodle Texas. Was hit and miss. Not too many birds... Best hunting out there is usually in Oct.

Hunted Thursday around Wichita Falls and got a limit by 9:00AM. Took the 12 gauge and glad I did...there were birds moving, but no big groups, just singles and pairs for the most part.

Dove hunting just south of Graford has been very slow for us. Has anyone in that area had any large numbers or even far numbers of birds flying?

Any input on the outlook for that area would be appreciated as well?

Saw around 40 (at best) on the power lines around my fields this morning. Jumped in the truck fairly early and drove to Weatherford on 180, saw maybe 20 birds the whole way. Man do we need a front.

It was slow in Young county tonight. Killed a few white wings over my tank. It wouldn't be worth driving anywhere for but I was excited because my Shorthair pup swam out and brought them back to me. She's been a little nervous around the gun but tonight she learned to like it.

Had a few birds coming to water this past weekend, but the real reason to go out was to give my 14 month old Lab (his name is Gauge) his maiden voyage in the field with live fire and real birds. I've been working with him all summer, and I couldn't be happier. The first bird went down hard, but still had life. Gauge was Johnny on the spot to the bird, but didn't quite know what to do. This was his first experience with a soft feathery thing in his mouth, (not the rubber dummy he is accustomed to) AND it was flapping. It took a bit of coaxing to get him to grab and hold it, but he figured it out. Bird two was folded in flight, Gauge had the mark, and retrieved on command, brought it back half way, and then decided to play with it a bit and spit the feathers out. PROGRESS, and only the 2nd bird! The next few followed a similar pattern, fetch, retrieve part way back, and drop the bird, clear his mouth of feathers, and then after some coaxing, bring it close.

But buy the time we had 9-10 birds in the bag, he knew the routine. Watch the sky, watch dad kill one bird out of four he shot at, and retrieve. He LOVED it, he had a very special dinner for his hard work, and he slept like a baby. Looking forward to many years of memories with this fella.

It's so bad here in Van Zandt county that I saw where my lab had put himself up for adoption to a family that has birds.

Usually can scratch out a limit or two around here the first week of the season then it slows down until we get a major front. Second season is generally great here...I haven't even fired a shot. My local birds that we here all summer are gone. Haven't seen a dove in over 3 weeks.

Not sure what to make of it. We've got a lot of cottontails this year and the hawks and cara-cara are thick. Even have a few bald eagles hanging around. May have something to do with it.

That's a great pic of you and your pup. My Yellow lab Remi is three years old this season and I remember our first outing. That moment when the dog "gets it" is the most rewarding. Did you train him yourself?

So. Given that temperatures are suppose to stay constant for the next 10 days, when are y'all heading back out? I've been going once or twice a week because I can, but the drive and time is getting old when I'm not bringing anything home.

P.S. I was out this morning in Rockwall County. I saw maybe a handful of dove, and a whole lot of songbirds.

I was out earlier this week scouting some public land around rockwall. I saw a couple other trucks pull in after me but heard no shots fired. I finally managed to bag 5 but it was a rough day out. To the gentleman in with the grey vest if you see this I managed to get that bird in the water. I just had to get a little wet. roflmao I will not loose a bird! Last week me and a friend went out to #2316 which looked to have soybeans? on it which was recently cut. Lots of birds in the distance but only saw about 5 which were within 80 yards. That was on the north west part of the field. Shoot me a PM if y'all want to go out there and meet up. Generally I'm out there by 0600 week days are best for me. Good luck!

Went to the deer lease just south of Richards yesterday around 10am. Jumped 2 ringnecks, 3 ww and 1 morning dove out of different trees as I was walking around.

Brenham TX: no birds in the area. have small tank on properly typically they come in prior to sunset, all gone here. Need major front to bring some new birds.

Heading down to south Texas next month maybe more birds there at some public hunt properties.

hunt safe all.

Me and one of my sons went to Throckmorton . Hunted Saturday afternoon and this morning. We each got limits both days. You would have thought Saturday afternoon was opening weekend with all the birds we have. That makes 7 hunts for me and that same son...all limits. My youngest son has 5 hunts and 5 limits. Oldest son has 3 hunts and 30 birds total. We are shooting a fair number of northern birds now. Few, if any at all really small, young dove in our harvest. All are big fat dove to good average size dove.

It was a little slower this weekend in Woodson. Hunted with texasdove.net again and got 13 (one whitwing) in the morning and had to hunt the evening to get my last two. The Saturday evening hunt was interrupted by a violent squall for about 30 minutes. Lighting cracked above our heds and my sone and I ran for the SUV. Got ourselves and the dogs in the vehicle just in time to miss the deluge. Shot my first two Eurasian ringnecks Sunday morning at the Puddin's Gorman field nar Graham. My son shot another rignnek. That was a real treat. Going to grill them up tonight and try them out.

Northern birds showed up in Young County last night. We had a good hunt and saw over 40 this morning on the power lines. Wish I was going to be home to hunt tonight.

VPLANU last I went out the edges were striped along with one path connecting from south pond to north pond. There was a large area in the middle that was cleared out and baled up. Didn't see any birds out that way.

Compost time! unless you have low-life critters around the property that digs things up? i bury old animals and such in our piles of trash, and few months makes great garden, field fertilizer.

Vplanu I didn't notice the whole carcass but by the south west pond was it's other leg. Did you see any birds? Pm if you'll be free after this front rolls in late next week. Paramedic school final is Monday!

Had a good hunt tonight in Fisher county. Limited out and was proud of the Shorthair pup I brought with me. We didn't lose a bird in the grass. The last bunch of dove that came over I killed all three. She brought me two and the last one flew over the tank dam when she got on him. She came back with that bird in her mouth and I was pretty proud.

All dove were small no northern s.

Guys had a decent hunt yesterday, seems like a few more birds starting to push in. New field this morning, we'll see what it has.

Decent morning, no limits but most shot 5-10 birds.

Bird numbers still really high out in Throckmorton County. Big group out yesterday with almost everyone with limits. I got another limit this am by 10 after 8. Lots of bigger birds too with lots of plume.

We hunted Throckmorton Friday afternoon, Sat morning and sun morning. If you can shoot easy limits. Most had between 5-12 birds in our group of 11 hunters. Me and a couple others limited every hunt. About 75% of our birds are northern birds. Sunday morning I had my limit in about 45 minutes. Most who did not limit should have or at least very close. Still plenty of birds but that all may change this week.

Last weekend was a little slow compared to the past. Still shot some but had to shoot well and be where they wanted to be to get a limit. Nothing easy but still had a good time.

We were in Jim Wells county around Alice this last weekend and it was great as usual. I took 14 friends down and everyone burnt lots of powder and most shot limits. The others just couldn't hit 'em very well. Had 2 kids that killed their first limits ever. We hunted the same field 3 days in a row and it never let up. We even shot 25 or so pidgeons over the weekend. Those young boys had a blast shooting the pidgeons. My son and fiancée's son shot 5 out of one group. I was proud!! I Wish I had time to go back. Sunday morning we had gobblers serenade us for a while until the shooting started. We also met the game warden and he is a great example of a great game warden. Very cordial and even shook your hand when he walked up. After a good visit I got his card and invited him back any time.

3.5" at my gate in Murray and 4.5" at my LO's place up in Throckmorton. Those numbers were as of 5pm yesterday. Boy it was needed though.

Why is the rain a concern?

Hunting conditions, or will it force the birds to move on?

I was planning on going out tomorrow morning. . .

Would appreciate a scouting report if you think of it. My dad and son will be at my place 1 mile east of puddins. Dad said he may head over there to hunt while my son bow hunts. We haven’t been since opening weekend.

I saw more birds on power lines today driving around than Ive seen all year. Big fat birds to boot!

I'm hoping this cold front pushed them in.

Immediately after a rain the birds always fly good.

Another .2" of rain last night, pretty muddy out here, that makes 2.65" for the week. Just got back from Breckenridge, saw lots of birds.

Quite a few birds in Woodson. It was raining at 3pm so I left and went to Murray. Quite a few birds there too and it wasn't raining. Got 3. 1 person can't keep them flying. Probably should have had 8 but some of my shells obviously were lead free. wink

I tried for dove Saturday morning in the Honey Grove area; it was a beautiful, glorious morning, but no birds were bagged. For that matter, none were even assaulted with harsh language, as they obviously found the scenery more appealing elsewhere.

I went sat afternoon and this morning. Man we still have a lot of dove. The owner said he has not recall seeing seen this many dove Oct 1st . Anyway the afternoon and this morning's hunt was the 11th and 12th hunt of the year and the 11th and 12th limit also. I went alone also...nobody in my group wanted to go but me confused2 I agree with our landowner we had doves in the past but not this many. Throckmortan area.
