Interesting question. But, I always hesitate to answer.
I bring 4 boxes with me, usually get a limit by 2-3 boxes hammer. Not mainly because I am a bad shooter, just because for fun. In early season, when lots of birds show up, I would pass easy shot and pick the further or faster birds. I enjoy shooting as well as harvest, the more shooting the more fun. Btw, I always leave more boxes in the truck, even I have 4 in my backpack. blush

I really like those long shots. Have paced many at or over 80 paces. I like saying "watch this" before I shoot. My brother and nephew shake their heads and laugh really hard when I miss a short easy floater. Pisses me off. roflmao All about the fun of shooting to me. The "Harvest" is minimal even if you limit. But they sure taste good fried, sauteed or my favorite, wrapped up in a Jalapeno with cream cheese and Bacon grilled. food

I'm the opposite and like Guy. I extend my hunts by being VERY selective on birds. 1 box of shells does it for most of sept. I look for that long tail that mature birds have. I leave the stub tailed young birds to my cronies friends to shoot at. grin But by late sept and October the birds are more serious about where they fly and the northern birds are coming in on a tail wind that makes high quality shots fewer and more challenging.

If I don't get to shoot 3 boxes for a limit I feel cheated.

the guy who tells me he takes one box and gets a limit, I will call BS "most" of the time.

Oh yes, its been done but give us a break. then , there is .410 man...please.

now, back to the OP, I take two boxes in my pouch but the truck is close by if needed. These days, if I don't get a limit, its not the end of the world. Its all about the experience.

What's wrong with a .410 for dove? I shoot an 1100 auto for dove. Use a couple of Mojos, pick your shots and you can have a limit pretty quickly.

Thanks for the input

It all boils down to picking good shots, and what kind of shot you are. If you have to ask, you probably need more lol. I did a day lease once, land owner put this newbie on the best spot on the lease. This guy shot all morning long, over 4 boxes of shells, and did not hit one bird. Do yourself a favor, go to the range and shoot some clay. If you are hitting less than 50% of your targets, take a few lessons from a pro. It will make all the difference in the world, you will have a lot more fun. And in the long run, you will save a lot of money on shells, above and beyond what you spent for lessons.

Exactly why I started shooting clays. I got tired of hauling 5 boxes of shells into a field to shoot 15 birds. I like the clays enough to do it year round, it's a lot of fun.

You made another good point too -
Scout the field a bit before you set up. Look for corners with trees or a fence line, or nearby trees where dove may roost overnight. Sometimes they will enter a field over the tallest tree in the area. Never over look a dead tree. Dove love to perch in a dead tree.

The spot you pick can make a tremendous difference in your success.
Good luck to everyone.

With a couple of Mojo's running, it is not hard to get your limit quickly. We hunt hunt just north of I20 in Trent and I use 30" barrel .410 with 2.5", 1/2 ounce, 7.5 shot. I don't think I have used a box of shells for a limit in a long time.
