Looking to replace my stock Rem700 stock and I'm not made of money. I also would rather not toss money in the trash. Is this a decent poorboy's aftermarket stock, or a piece? Thanks, Gary http://www.riflestock.com/store/do/product/VMS/24-01-10

I don't know about the stock in question. But I've lot a long action Remington 700 CDL stock if you're interested in keeping the same look.

I've owned one before on a 20" savage. That stock is VERY heavy and seemed unbalanced to me. I was not a fan.

Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

If all it was going to be was a bench gun, maybe, but I think there are better options. TexFlip lists a good option althought I have never held one personally. You did not state the guns purpose, bench gun, occasional carry deer rifle, stalking rifle. It will make a difference due to the weight you want to carry around. Also you did not mention if a mini chassis stock like MDT might work for you if you wanted to a tactical direction. Very solid light stock for #399 that will accept AI mags without buying a $200 to $300 dollar bottom plate.

That'll work.. I've also heard good things about B&C stocks. Not much more than what you're looking to spend.

That first one is a POS period, the one Tex mentioned is a much better option, you can find used HS Precision stocks for ~300 bucks which is another d**n fine option

Maybe you like the tacticool look or maybe your tastes are more [sensible] like mine. I have several Bell & Carlson of the classic sporter persuasion with the aluminum bedding block, and I am very satisfied with them. You may luck out and find a used one at a good price, but new ones run $271 just about everywhere you find them. The trouble with spending "less" (whatever that might mean to you) is that you'll end with something you'll wish you hadn't bought. Buy once, cry once. If I was made of money I'd be buying McMillans, but I really am satisfied with the B&Cs...plenty good enough.

Buy an exact on Ebay, I just got one for $85.00, BDL in great shape. I grit blasted and painted it myself. I put the original stock in the safe to keep. That's Krylon Fusion, Matte Desert Tan (3-4 coats) and Krylon Black webbing paint. Works great, comes out in ribbons and dries very hard. Gives a good textured finish.
An unethical shot is one you take, that you know you shouldn't.

I owned a choate. Garbage. Made cheaply, and it feels like it. And I'm not a big money gun kind of guy. I was looking for a poor mans stock as well, and it was bad. Lots better options out there.

YES< YES< YES !!! forget all these cheaply crappy tacticool ones. Sit down at the bench and watch the shooters around you stare and giggle cuz the know. If you cant afford to do it right, just leave it alone

I've owned one before on a 20" savage. That stock is VERY heavy and seemed unbalanced to me. I was not a fan. Same experience for me. What will be the primary use for the rifle? The use will dictate the best options. Good used stocks for the R700 are abundant at deep discounts on ebay and the hunting and shooting forums. Concur with the positive feedback on the B&C stocks. It is heresy to say it, but the B&C's feel better to me than most of the McMillan's I have owned.
