Lots of places where a break in would be easily noticed while you go inside to take a whizz. Just think outside the box.

Laying blame on this poor man for his rifle getting stolen is the same thing as if his beautiful wife was taken from the truck and raped. "He should have known better than to take such a pretty woman put in public."

Insane.

Typical of this forum anymore, the holier than thou crew shows up and hijacks a thread.
This guy asked for help and lo and behold, no one offers help.

i don't think anyone is laying blame, I'm certainly not. The thieves are to blame 100%. Some, including myself just have a different perspective and opinions on how they roll and secure their belongings...specifically firearms. Nothing remains in the car/truck when not present...backpack, laptop, phone, other valuables go with me whether I'm gone a few minutes or longer. Yep, I'm that guy walking through the grocery store with my backpack (gun bag) in the shopping cart. Planning ahead can prevent becoming a victim.

I'm curious though, the rifle case is large...was it laying across the back seat of the truck or car or in a trunk?

The ONLY help anyone on here can give the fella that had his rifle stolen is to keep an eye out for this gun. I'm sure that anyone that opened this thread will be on the lookout.
Another way to help others is to offer opinions that will perhaps help someone else from being in the same predicament.

The truck had no stickers other than A&M sticker. The gun was on the floor of the backseat covered up by stuff with clothes on top.

I wish him luck. It sounds like bad luck as he didn't do anything wrong
I asked about the stickers as those are and can be inviting to the bad guys

I sent the picture and description of the gun to a couple of LEO's here in the Hill Country, and to two people I know who are in the long range shooting interest group. The San Antonio gun show is this weekend; it might be a good idea to contact the sponsors of the show: Saxet. The idiot who did the robbery may not be so stupid as to try to fence it this soon after taking it, but most of these [censored] are not necessarily the sharpest knives in the drawer.

Thanks Mikie.

All info in this thread is good info. I keep my gun in my truck sometimes when I go to the store. I will now plan accordingly for now on.

Thanks everyone for helping share this and spreading knowledge of how to possibly not have it happen to us.

It's not a matter of putting blame on anyone, but encouraging others to plan ahead and stay smart.

I have to believe crooks are drawn to trucks and drivers who have a certain look to them. You look like someone with the means to buy some nice guns, and young enough to leave one or two of them in your truck.

Tough luck for your buddy. I hope he gets his rifle back and the POS who stole it is dealt with harshly.

I have stickers on my truck but nothing inside worth stealing. I'll keep an eye out here MM, but I doubt anything will show up this far NE.

This, had you just left the range where someone might have seen it and followed you? If so check the log at the range to see who was there. Even if they did not follow you they may have called someone to do the job. I am a long ways away but will keep an eye open for it.

I don't get why the victim is being bashed for having this rifle "covered up by other belongings, and in a case" in his locked truck. Who's to say he just came from the shooting range, or he may have just picked up the rifle from a gun smith. If you are a gun owner you can't tell me you have never had a gun small, or big in your truck. It's just that one time that turned into bad luck. On the other hand, if he did come from a range or a gun shop. I am willing to bet money on someone saw it and followed him to his first stop. Then again it could have been someone he knew.

Yes, I did. And it was a guy who saw my post here that noticed the rifle in a pawn shop and notified me.

I can't tell you how to prevent theft if you leave your rifle(s) in the truck like I did. I still blame myself even though we've all done it. Mine was parked next to my house, in a gated community. Not a public setting.

Anyway, there are several things I can offer with respect to possibly recovering your firearms if they're ever stolen.

-Write down all your serial numbers. Guns, rings, scopes, barrels, triggers anything that has a serial number, write it down.

-Take photos and video of every one of them.

-Engrave your identity on each gun in an inconspicuous area.

-If stolen, go to the PD and file a report immediately. Having all of the aforementioned info will speed up that process.

-Verify that your info has been entered into TCIC/NCIC so if your guns show up somewhere for sale and the buyer checks, they'll be flagged as stolen.

-Check your insurance. If your guns are of significant value, you're going to need a rider on your homeowner's policy to cover them.

That's about all the help I can offer. Very sorry for your loss OP and don't give up hope. You may get lucky and get it back like I did.

cheers not sure were the gun was stolen... most stores do have security cams, sure the police checked that out... got my daughter & son-in-law one for Christmas, it was cheap, they up-dated it.. 9-11 changed the way we think... Never had a gun safe, doors left unlocked, then again, my guns weren't that expensive... flag

carrying and leaving a gun in your car...it's a decision only we can make,

Three things can happen

1. It gets stolen and you are out the $$ it costs. You drop your head, walk away knowing you took the chance and now its gone.

2. The police will take it as evidence if you have to use it to defend yourself. You may never see it again.

3. None of the above and you consider yourself lucky.

it's a coin toss,, yes, I keep a gun in my car all the time, so I have made the decision if it goes, it's gone.

Good luck. I shared the info with a close relative who works the regional gun shows every weekend in north and west Texas.
