Lyme disease aint no joke ... Very true. My wife contracted Lyme disease over 40 years ago, but wasn't diagnosed until about 5 years ago. She wasn't even aware it was a tick bite at the time, but recalls the "bullseye" and other symptoms. She had odd, mixed symptoms for many years before it was finally diagnosed. Don't mess around if you have a tick bite. Cass

I look every time I come into the house even if I was only outside for a short walk. Paid off today with one on my leg, just got attached so it came off easy.

when I was just a wee little kid back in the early '60s, we hunted on top of White Bluff overlooking Lake Buchanan. There were numerous artisan springs up on top with creeks flowing down over the face of the bluff. After a morning hunt, my dad and I were down playing in the creek making little dams and crossing paths ... evidently, I got into seed ticks somewhere. Several hours later when we got home, as I was taking off my clothes, I noticed both of my legs were covered in little micro dot ticks and they were all stuck. My dad put me in the bathtub, filled it up and started pouring baking soda in the water and took a small very stiff bristle brush and scrubbed me until I was raw, almost bleeding. The water was literally covered with tiny little ticks. I did have a reaction to that many bites, ran a fever for several days and took benedryl.
so I am overly cautious now days and carry a container of Sevin dust in my truck, dust on my legs from the knees down before going into any tall grass.

Found one on myself about 10 days ago... Must have been on there for about 8-10 hours or so. Started feeling tired/achy/feverish this morning and assumed it was just a virus or something I caught. Didn't even think to check the tick bite area. An hour later after I shower I noticed the tick bite had gotten significantly worse.. Went to the Doc today and awaiting results from a blood test. Doubt it is anything but better safe than sorry.

we had them bad in our yard last year, only two so far this year. They would jump off the dog and creep on you from the carpet at night. The wife was not happy until she was sure they were all gone. They can live for up to a year without feeding.. Never knew a tick could "jump"

I read an article about the study of Lyme disease, and I thought it was on here through a link. Does anyone know where that link was at? It was a good article about how the disease travels in mice. I've been looking, but unable to find.

Some years ago I got a single tick in the armpit up in Colorado. Made a red, swollen place and 10 days later I had a crashing headache and high fever. Doc put me on massive, stomach-destroying antibiotics for a month. Next day I remember 105 fever, I passed out and woke up in the ER with 2 IV bags of very cold feeling saline. It's called rickettsia, there are dozens of human-contagious species, and I would rather have a bear eating my guts than see a tick crawling up my leg.

I found one in my hair on Sunday. I now have two bags of insect control in the garage I plan to carpet bomb the backyard with this evening.
coffee spelled backwards is eeffoc. I don't give eeffoc until I have my morning coffee.

That is the good stuff! Once applied to clothes and gear, it will last the whole hunting trip. It is also scent free after it dries. There is no worse place on the planet for ticks and chiggers than Laguna Atascosa NWR. I used permethrin on my clothes and footwear and used Repel Tick Defense with picaridin on my skin (which is also scent free after it dries). The other two guys in my group just used deet. They got eaten up by ticks and chiggers. I did not. Deet is so overrated, i think they all got imune to it, even fat mosquitos. I use permethrin and sulfur I buy both in bulk. The pharmacist thinks im the next unabomber

Check your local feed/chemical stores. I found a concentrated bottle for 11.00 plus tax that would make up to 1 gal. when mixed. You can get it in the linked size at Wallyworld also, but it only covers two sets of clothes.

Interesting topic. One about how ticks are dangerous and there is another topic about the joys of eating jackrabbits which are covered in ticks...

Just returned from hunting in South Africa. I and a 19 year old kid got(or now have) South African tick fever. We're taking antibiotics and just about over all complications. It weakened me for 3 or 4 days but no really big deal.
Without a sense of urgency, nothing ever happens.

Had Lyme disease in the 90's. Lucky it was diagnosed quickly. No long term effects. Haven't hunted where they are prevalent since then. I agree Lyme disease is no joke.

At 36% that will need some serious deluting. The regular bottle sold in Walmart is at 0.50%. Good deal, but people will need to make sure they delute it down correctly.
