Looking to reload moderate 357 rounds ~ 1200-1300fps 158gr Xtreme plated bullets. They are rated up to 1500 fps and have thicker plating than Berrys etc. Generally recommend topping out at 1200 fps.

https://www.xtremebullets.com/Bullet-Load-Info-s/1952.htm

My first choice was Alliant 2400 -- but apparently that is "unobtainium" so I went with with my 2nd or 3rd choice because I could find it -- Win 296/H110 -- forgetting that it wants Small pistol magnum primers (and doesn't like to be downloaded.) so far so good since I'm looking for 1200-1300 fps load should be at the starting point of plated load (XTP) [15.5-16 gr].

But of course, I only have 100 SPMagnum on hand but LOTS of Small Rifle Primer. I've scoured the interwebs and there seems to be tons of folks who have used small rifle primers with the 110/296 357Magnum loads.

In all likelihood I will head out to find small pistol magnum primers since I am at heart a rule follower, but I thought I would ask if anyone here has firsthand experience using the small rifle (CCI) primers in a load like this (win 296/h110)?

Thanks
T

That's not something I've experimented with as of yet, but I dont see much of a problem with using a small rifle primer in .357 Mag as long as tbe strike is sufficient and the load is worked up the way it should be. I may try it one of these days with a brick of Remington 6-1/2s I bought by mistake several years ago.

Loaded plenty of SR in place of SP. You'll be fine.

Thanks! I felt pretty confident about doing so but it's good to check in with those with experience. Of course it turns out I went and bought small pistol magnum primers today. I'll load some small rifle as part of my test batch too.

I use Rem 7 1/2 primers in a couple of Contenders in 360 DW and 357 Max with a heavy dose of 296.

Youll be fine with small rifle with H110. It will set it off very reliably. Heck even reloading books will tell you to use small rifle on 30 carbine loads with h11o. Its very similar to 357 mag.
