i mixed in some corn with my protien to get the deer hooked and the birds are raking it out to get the corn. They have almost emptied 300 pounds on the ground in two weeks.

Yeah, Greenjays one of the cooler birds you will ever see in deep South Texas while deer hunting. They are from Mexico, cool medium color green on top feathers, belly feathers are a lighter green/yellowish color. Head color is black with interesting splotches of blue/green intermittent. They usually group up in pairs or more. They are very vocal and have had them land on my blind windows more times than I can count in 40+ years of having hunted in the Laredo area. They love eating the full kernels of corn off the senderos and are good at chasing other birds off of it.

Head splotches are blue/purplish, not blue/green on their black heads and black eye patches. My favorite seen birds down there, fun just watching those guys while hunting.

I thought it was coon birds at first and they probably contributed. But after trapping a coon with the dukes, I was closing the feeder gate up and witnessed several very small birds constantly kicking the protien out on the ground. Not exactly sure what kind but they were very small. Maybe trying to make a nest in the tube?
I'll have to bring the BB gun out next time. Got distracted by a distant turkey gobble and went to try and call them in.
All the rest of the birds eat off the ground.

We have Green Jays here in SW DeWitt County, never seen them at my protein feeders though. I know you don't want one to see you on a deer stand! Every critter in the brush will know it.
I have a large tom turkey that eats out of the protein feeder about 300 yards from my house. I've never seen one do that in the pasture nor do I have a game cam picture of them eating protein.

I also pulled the lid off a protein feeder once and a squirrel jumped out. The only explanation was that he had burrowed up through one of the ports. I was not expecting such!
