I was one of the four lucky hunters drawn for this years gemsbok or scimitar oryx hunt at Mason Mt. WMA, up in the Hill country of Texas. It was a great hunt, and I had the opportunity to meet and make new friends. There were two of us hunting scimitar and two others hunting gemsbok (Kalahari oryx). They are separated because they can inter-breed so there is a cross fence across the property. Lots of deer, hogs, sable, waterbuck, Thompson gazelle, axis, some blackbuck and the oryx. Great chances to get some pictures. It was a 3 day hunt, so started out Wed. afternoon following some range time, then all day Thursday and finished at noon on the last day. Food and lodging is provided for this hunt, and the accommodations are really nice. After a short indoctrination and discussion about physiology and shot placement they asked us what we expected and wanted to do. I told them I would prefer to look at all the animals on Wed and Thurs, then take a nice representative bull on Friday morning. That is exactly what we did, and it was a fun hunt. One of each animal was taken on the second day by hunters, and the third guy made a bad shot on his animal and lost it. They looked all evening Thurs and then about 6 people looked again on Friday but it was never found. Sucks to go home without your trophy. The bull I took was 39.5" on both horns, and was very narrow and symetrical. Prefect for a beautiful trophy in my home. Had Custom Processing in Brady do the meat for me, and Jason did an excellent job. I went on down to Matagorda and then Uvalde for a few days, and the meat was ready for me when I came back. A great trip and I can't wait to get back to Texas once again. It certainly was a nice break from the two feet of snow and 25 below zero temperatures here at home in Idaho!!!!!!!!

They skinned him out whole and I have a lot to work with, so I will thaw out the hide this week and see just what I want to cut off. Both Research and Tru-Fit make nice wall pedestal mannikins, so that is probably what I will do. A hard turn form to start out, and just keep cutting the form and turning the head until I get the horns near the wall, but looking out forward as much as possible. Should come out really nice.

Blank, great hunting with you. I got the other Simitar Oryx. Friday morning, Mark and I got a glimpse of the wounded Gemsbok but could not corner him for a kill shot. Hate the other guy losing the Gemsbok. Glad to know you got back to Idaho safely.

Like wise, really enjoyed spending time with everyone. No wonder these animals are so tough, and there are some bullet failures! I got the shock of my life Monday when I thawed out the hide and caped my oryx. That hide is over one inch thick, and is twice as thick as any elk we work on. It reminds me of a watermelon rind. I sure hope the tannery gets it thinned down a lot, or sewing it is gonna be a bitch!

Congrats on a fine Scimi.
I too had the good fortune to hunt Mason Mountain for Scimitar back in 2012, as part of the standard draw hunt (not the full service version). Gorgeous ranch with all kinds of neat wildlife. Top notch staff too. I was lucky enough to take an old fighter of a bull, but he wasn't as nice as yours!

Awesome animal and congrats!!

I sure hope the tannery gets it thinned down a lot, or sewing it is gonna be a bitch! I have hunted MM on couple of occassions for deer. I have donated to the draws for years and will continue until successful or not physically able. The information on hide thickness will be helpful if I'm ever able to draw this hunt. Congrats that is a nice one. I have looked at them while hunting WT there and they are beautiful animals.

Things finally settled down a bit, and my hunting partner and I were able to put up my Scimitar Oryx last week. Finished painting and drying, and brought home yesterday. The colors didn't change very much at all in the tanning process. I absolutely love how it turned out! You quickly forget just how big a 40" bull's horns are, until you see them on the wall! I deliberately looked for one with close together conformation, instead of wide flaring horns. That would have taken some more cutting and shaping of the form, and for a first one we decided to go the "easy" route!!! Hope you all enjoy the pics, and good luck in this years public land drawing. Hope to see you out there, and make some new friends.

Was this the big time Texas hunt or the exotic Mason Mountain hunt?

It was the Mason Mt. exotic hunt in the drawn hunts. I had 11 points when I drew, which was the big surprise because many people have a lot more.
