Is it possible we'll see new legislation that removes suppressors from NFA requirements? Maybe just require the purchaser to pass a background check and then be done.

I think it's possible, but I'm not sure it will be real high on his initial to-do list. For the life of me I can't figure out why suppressors are still on the list. Well, actually I may have an idea - $$$.

I think they make way too much money off them and tax stamps for SBR's they'll never give up that income from them.

They probably spend 500.00 to process each form. Say we keep the tax and have the ability to walk out the door at the time of purchase. Not my preferred outcome, but I'd take this vs. the waiting.

I'd fully agree to that. Paying the tax stamp isn't what irks me so much. Have to pay a tax stamp to duck hunt as well, its the wait that I hate. There is no reason I should have to wait that long for a hear device. I waited 1 year and 2 months for my first suppressor and SBR. That is asinine. The sig brace has all but made the SBR legislation obsolete. If it is ok for me to have a "brace" on my rifle that functions pretty much exactly the same as a fixed butt stock and call it a pistol I should be able to just put a damn butt stock on my rifle tube and call it a day it is the exact same thing. As for making money you're right their agents probably put in "overtime" to process the applications.

Agreed. I'm fine with paying the tax but I want my NFA items that day. I've come to the realization that they will never give up the money they get from the tax stamps and we should just be happy they haven't raised the tax proportionately since the NFA act was put into law. I think if it's off the list, the tax needs to go away. Bare minimum it needs to be reduced by about 75%. The combination of lower cost and ease of purchase will likely bump sales enough to make up for the reduction.

Agree that if its off the list a tax stamp should not be required. Stamp has been $200 since 1934...that would have been about $3500 in today's money... WOW

WOW That is why I consider us lucky that it hasn't been adjusted for inflation. That tax was originally implemented to make it all but unaffordable to have NFA items.

They are already working on it and put together the hearing protection act to remove Supressors however I don't think the NFA will give up the money I heard another approach that I like much more. Someone was talking about still doing a wait and paying a 200 dollar tax stamp but make it a one time wait after you get approval being able to purchase NFA items and walk out the same day after intital approval personally I would prefer that.

Question. Most states make suppressor ownership illegal unless ownership follows NFA registration. Would removal of suppressors from NFA without any changes in state law make them illegal to possess at the state level?

Technically yes. Including the way the Texas statute is written suppressors would be illegal in the state without legislative changes. I think this would be addressed.

Now that I own a suppressor, my opinion is that all the requirements to get one is silly and makes no sense whatsoever. They should be available to buy just like a loaf of bread. They're not as quiet as depicted in the movies, but they definitely help protect your hearing.
This is useless govt regulation that needs to go away.

I agree that the tax money that is given up will be the biggest hurdle. While I don't like having to shell out 200 bucks per suppressor, I just want it the day I buy it. The wait time is ridiculous and the new restrictions that have been put on gun trusts with obummers EO are stupid. I hope those get reversed when Trump takes office.

Well now you have them introducing a bill to get rid of the tax stamp and wait time which would be great. Hopefully it will bring the ridiculous cost for a suppressor down with more companies getting in to making them. Both bills are named the Hearing Protection Act and were introduced by Reps Jeff Duncan (R SC) and John Carter (R TX) in the house and Sen Mike Crapo (R ID) in the Senate. I had a chance to buy a Salvo 12 from my local shop for $800.00 which is a great deal but I wouldn't have been able to get it to well after upland bird hunting was over with at Top Flight so I held off. If this goes through and the prices go down then I will end up purchasing probably about 5 of them for my collection. Keeping my fingers crossed!!!!

Agree and I think you will start seeing way more firearms produced with suppressors built into them since there will be no burden in purchasing them.

Really hoping this all comes through. Would like a suppressor just not willing to go through the red tape it currently requires.

You've got to know that every gun mfgr out there has the materials, tooling, and designs waiting in the wings for this to pass.

If this passes the next few years should see the industry flourish and for the consumer a better, more efficient and less expensive product.

Should the HPA pass I suspect manufactures and retailers will price gouge out of the gate due to supply vs. demand. Similar to the run on ammo, magazines and ARs a few years ago.

There's a sucker born every minute..... Initially supply will be low and demand high resulting in high prices..... Then demand will ramp up to meet demand ultimately exceeding demand.....and prices ill fall! I love the free market...... I've waited this long....I can wait a little longer....
