Ar 15 platform Pick your caliber 300 black out under 150 yards very versatile Can shoot supersonic and subsonic rounds best suppressed 6.8 or 308 if you are field hunting ,longer shots .223 kill pigs ,good for running shots ,field hunts cheaper Ammo Best thing is to buy 7.62 suppressor that covers all calibers Pulsar apex is a great thermal and priced well Or an infrared n 750 will get it done until you can get a thermal

I have a small budget and have been watching and listening and the photon XT seems to be a reliable and cheap way to go explore the NIGHT.
I also have my eyes on the bushnell equinox night vision monocular for less than $300 to compliment the gun.
Cost is $1000 minus the gun of course.
I figure to get started it is perfect!
GO TRUMP!

ATN's X-Sight will get you started for under 1000 bucks and it has built in video recording. It is a digital day and night scope. Just remember to get the extended battery pack. All most any of your AR-15 calibers will get the job done. I use a 6.5 Grendel with thermal and a 7.62x39 with the X-Sight.

FLIR Scout II handheld for thermal scanning, then I stalk in with my 6.8 and a Photon mounted up top.
I got into the FLIR and Photon both during last years Black Friday sales. I think I paid less than $400 for the Photon and nearly 50% off retail from the FLIR after the sale and $1000 manufacturer rebate.
It's a good combo. I wouldnt have it any other way. Scanning with a rifle-mounted thermal all night was for the birds.

ATN suck. I had one and sent it back the next day after I used it. It lagged a lot and could not see very far. I have bought an Armasight Nemisis 4 x gen 2 and will tell you it is after I use it this weekend. Do not but the ATN

I went with the Ruger SR 7.62 (.308) and initially used high power LED lights, but recently graduated to the Apex 50A. Sweet combination. The ATN Binox-HD work really well for scanning--as long as you get the external battery.

LOL!!! Get real folks, he stated his budget and you are STILL trying to get him to go thermal! Sure, when I grow up, I want thermal too but can't afford one so I do the best I can. I can attest the Photon is a good choice as I have had one on my backup 6.8 for a couple of years now and it's killed lots of hogs in many different hands. Also look at an Evolva T20 Illuminator for under 50.00 with mount and batteries/charger. The T20 is almost identical to the 200.00 units sold and gets you multiple power settings and variable focus from flood to spot. Get a good flash hider on the end of the muzzle - it will help with follow up shots. That combination will allow you to see further than most folks should safely shoot at night and make quick follow up shots. I use a MilSurp Gen2 hand held unit to scan with. I use a low power 850nm IR illuminator in conjunction with it to light up the eyes. You can actually see the eye reflection fairly deeply in the brush with that combo. After you watch for a while and get familiar with it, you can usually tell what the animal is by the eye movement when they are in the brush. If you add anything thermal, you blow your budget probably 2x. Run away from the XSight. This is my backup 6.8 with Photon and Evolva for reference.

Vern 1 I agree the photon is a excellent choice to get into nighttime Hog hunting I have one as backup or when I have larger groups works great, best choice for 500.00 class scope ,the budget wasnt bought up when I replied, Like myself I had to stair step into thermal and still working on it ,,,,,

Windows movie maker - create an AVI and host on a free Photobucket account. Sheesh you bought a fancy scope but not a video technician to go along with it ...

Vern, I may have missed it on here, but I don't see anywhere the OP stated his budget...I see some numbers thrown around by other posters but simply missing the budget lubbockdave posted OP asked a very open ended question, and he has gotten a variety of answers. For the question asked, I agree with most that some thermal scope, thermal hand held device, and a AR platform in a decent round is the way to go. But without budget concerns, gosh, couldn't' we all spend around 10-15K on a night hunting platform and still want for something?

No budget, look at the $20-30 k thermals. Told the wife about them, she said not in MY LIFE TIME I think she was talking about my life time.

Was there a post deleted? I never saw a budget stated (Vern), nor any video question (Popper). Everyone taking their ADHD medicine?

In the third post I asked for his budget. In the fourth post, someone other than the OP replied 1000. Shame on me for reading too fast AND not connecting user names.
Sorry for adding to the confusion. I am only trying to help, not stir up [censored]. Have a nice day.
