Hunted at Big Oak Bowhunting this past weekend for a little R&R. Didn't really have a specific target in mind when I showed up other than just enjoying myself and letting the weekend hunt unfold. I wanted a red hind but knew I'd probably shoot a nice trophy if the opportunity presented itself. I had a real nice aoudad come in the first afternoon, but at that point I was still holding for a red deer. The rain shut down most of the activity the next day, but the owner put me in his personal stand off the feeders and along a game trail in hopes of ambushing the red deer on their way to feed. They came through but not from a direction I could a shot off. It was a rush being right on top of them but frustrating that they were on the wrong side of me. My chance at the red deer came and went but the excitement from the hunt wasn't disappointing in the least. On the last morning I was back in one of the enclosed stands with my fingers crossed that the red deer would show. Out comes a really nice 4x4 sika buck, and I decided to treat myself and put a 100gr Slick Trick through him. He bolted at the shot but as he ran off I could see where the arrow impacted and knew I'd made a good clean hit. After a short track we loaded him into the ATV to head to camp. As we're riding back, the owner's wife says "Stop, there's a hog". We look through the timber and there's a good pig bedded down at about 45-50yds. That's well outside my range, but the owner says "It's a long shot but you are welcome to take it." I nock an arrow and get out. The hog is watching us at this point, and I fully expect him to bust out at any second. I close the distance to about 35yds, and he gets up. I quickly drew, anchored, and put my 30 pin to top of his back. As soon as I release the hog started trotting off and the arrow sunk to the fletchings just forward of his back leg. I was ticked that I didn't account for him moving. Ranch owner and I both thought I'd made a terrible shot, but when we got out to make an attempt on tracking him, he was stone cold dead about 75yds away. The 100gr Jakhammer shredded his liver and left lung and had stuck in the ribcage right behind the far shoulder. We get over there to find a battle worn but fat boar with 4" cutters. We both laughed in surprise since the shot that looked horrible turned out to be one that killed him quick. I am really happy with my sika, but I gotta say the surprise boar really made the hunt. There are a lot of exotic ranches to choose from in Texas, but if you want a challenging hunt for a great quality animal while living it up in the nicest cabin with the most hospitable owners you'll find give Big Oak Bowhunting a call.
