Any examples and real life experience?

Patrick, my son has been shooting the Tikka T3 varmint model (heavy barrel) in 223 that I cut down to 17" shooting suppressed. It's an 8" twist barrel and shoots up to 75/77 grain bullets very well, mag fed. It is a great shooting rifle, and fun to shoot. He shot it in the Hunters Challenge match last year and did very well with it. We were running a 65 grain Sierra Game King, and it shot that load about 1/2 moa. If you want to take it and shoot it, let me know.

I do. It kills stuff. Do it.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

My truck gun is the Mossberg MVP Patrol rifle in 5.56. Bolt action, 16" barrel and synthetic stock. It uses standard AR magazines. More accurate than I expected it to be and it is compact enough to be able to snatch out of the back floorboard of my truck and get out the window in a hurry. http://www.mossberg.com/product/mvp-patrol-rifle-27709/

Rem 700 Tactical 1:9 twist cut down to 16.25". B&C stock, PTG bottom metal, AICS mag, Nikon p223 scope.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Sweet set-up and great photo! Thread that barrel and I'm in. Thanks for the idea.
Longtime hunter/shooter/fisherman who loves being outdoors. I used to hunt/compete with my son, but he's now stationed in Germany. Never enough time.

It's threaded in the photo, just has a protector on it. Wears a YHM Phantom Ti.
Just to make sure that it is done thoroughly, I go both ways.

Not a 16", but my 9 year old daughter hunts pretty much everything in our part of the world with a CZ-527 in 223 cut to 18" and running an Omega. The next barrel may get cut to 16". I have a Specwar 556 K that should be approved any day now that will be the permanent can for it once it gets here. I chopped the stock and fitted an adjustable buttplate to it so it can go down as far as a 12" LOP and out to about 13 3/4, which is all anyone in our family needs. It had my Harvester on it in this pic.

I have both a Tikka T3 and a Remington 700 223 at 16"ish. The Tikka with the lite barrel and 8 twist is my favorite, its closer to 17". It will still sling heavy bullets at a reasonable speed.
