Everybody does right? Well I don't have one. Closest I had was a Ruger P90 and the 35 lb trigger was so bad I swore off Ruger in it's entirety for a long time (10/22 made me feel better about them). So, I want one that is sub $1,000ish, and carries a name that makes you think 1911. I'm leaning Colt or Kimber but I don't want some off the wall name. Ed Brown and other high end guns are not on the radar. Looking for something timeless and something I can hand down to my future grandkids someday. Thinking stainless and rosewood grips. OK go......

Jump your budget slightly and a Dan Wesson 1911 meets your needs! You might be able to find a lightly used one for around $900 - $1,000.
I am still looking for the perfect apron, one with reinforced knee areas would be perfect.

you said you dislike ruger : the next time your in a gun shop check out the ruger SR1911 - It took Ruger 100 years to decide to build one and they did a great job of it.they are sweet and don't have a 35lb trigger. very accurate out of the box & look and feel great in the hand or even the Remington R11 Ruger entered the 1911 market in 2011. What makes the Ruger 1911 unique is that they offer a lot of standards on their guns that normally come from custom dealers. For example, the SR1911 has an oversized magazine release, extended thumb safety, skeletonized hammer and trigger for fast shooting, not to mention the integral plunger tube, beavertail grip safety, and precision barrel and brushing which are matched from the same piece of bar stock. Try and find all that anywhere else in a 1911. Good luck.

Colt
Went through exactly your situation a few months ago and ended up with a stainless Colt that I bought for $750 used and I love it. Shoots great. The more I read about Kimber quality issues, the less confidence I had in it that it would shoot accurately and reliably and not rust.
If you ask 1911 experts this question, the best value in the sub-$1000 1911 market is a Ruger. I was 99% set on getting one until I ran into the Colt used. I think Colt & Ruger both make good guns. I like the name and the resale of the Colt better.

If you don't have one, yes you need one. Lots of good options out there. All's I can speak on is my Springfield. It's an "Operator" model, and has been stellar. Plenty of guys here can comment weather or not most Springfield's are all of decent quality. I've only got the one pistol to report.

We all have preferences and most 1911's will feel the same. I'd look at kimber but that would be last on my list as they are not always great quality. Colt, sti, ruger, sig, Springfield, kimber, and a few more can all be had under $1k if you look. Add another 2-300 and that opens up even more options.

I've owned several and even the cheap ones like rock island can shoot. Took a little work to get smooth but it was just as reliable as any other one.

Sig and Springfield are in the running. Ruger and Remington are absolutely not. Sig P238 is the only Sig 1911 I've shot and those are sweet.

For your situation, I would say 100% go with a Colt. Will hold its value well and will be a great gift for the kids one day. People will always put a value on the Colt name, and they just are great pistols.

Try and find all that anywhere else in a 1911. Good luck. It's also built as a S70 gun, which is nice. It's good-looking, durable, and accurate. And Ruger stands behind their stuff as well as anybody (and better than many). The one I picked up at the gun show had a really nice, crisp trigger.

Yes everybody should have at least one 1911. I'm fortunate that I've shot most, and Kimber is my least favorite, even tho I own one. The dang spent casing's keep hitting me in the forehead. Anyway, Ruger, Smith, Springfield, Colt, are all excellent viable options. Happy shopping and safe shooting.

I have had most of the usual suspects over the years - Ruger, S&W, Sig, Colt, Springfield Armory, Remington, Para Ord, Dan Wesson, Kimber, STI, and every flavor of Armscorp you can think of.
Honestly, for sub $1000 your two best choices are Springfield Armory and Ruger. You can't find a bad Ruger SR1911 - you just can't. They are great guns at a great price.
My only gripe about S/A is they used to not all be US made - they are now. Again, excellent gun at an excellent price. They have far more available options and models than Ruger and price goes up depending on the one you select.
A base Ruger SR1911 Commander or Government model starts around $650-700. You can find a GI model Springfield for $550-600. The Operator which is what I prefer (rail, night sights - available in all steel or lightweight, government and semi-commander "champion" sizes) usually runs around $750-800.
I'd stay away from the micro-compact (3") Officer sized 1911s as your first 1911 unless you go with either the Colt Defender or Springfield. The most reliable 1911's will be 5" (government) and 4.25" (or in the case of Springfield 4") Commander size.

My last 1911 purchase was a Springfield Armory, and I do not regret it in the least. It's a great shooter!

I have owned a Colt Gold Cup. Extremely nice handgun. Sold it because I wanted something else. I replaced it with a Colt in 38 Super. If you haven't looked at the cartridge AND YOU RELOAD it is the way to go. Better ballistics than the 45ACP and extremely accurate. If you don't reload, ammunition in 38 Super can get pricey. Mine is the "Plain Jane" Government Model but it shoots great.

Dan Wesson makes a superb product. My journey with the 1911 started with an AMT and while the AMT was satisfying for awhile I then shot a Colt upgrade, then shot a Springfield upgrade then shot a Dan Wesson upgrade, just recently shot a Ed Brown Kobra Carry and Night Hawk but neither was that much better than a DW to warrant the upgrade. Unless I win the lotto and have endless $ to burn DW will carry me the rest of the way. And Yes you must own at least 1 1911 and a couple more never hurts.
