My dad caped a mule deer, then salted before freezing? I've never done it that way - always caped then froze. Never any problems for me. In looking at different info, it looks like caping/salting/freezing was a mistake.
What do the pros say? What is the best option for salvaging the cape? Thanks in advance for the insight.

Salt or freeze. Not both.

Your cape is fine. Although it will not completely freeze due to the salt it will still be fine. I've been tanning deer capes for 15+ years and have successfully tanned many capes handled and stored in this manner without issues.

The only problem might be if he didn't take all the red meat and fat off the skin before he salted. You have to split the lips , nostrils , turn the ears and remove all of the red meat and white fat before salting the skin will be effective. With that being said , since it's frozen it should be fine.

Thanks for the feedback. I am taking it to the taxidermist. He said his tannery will let him know if it is salvageable or not.
