1.5 for sure. Let him grow a year ago least. Good chance he will sprout forks and brows next year.

Thanks again. Think he will ever be anything but a spike? Because most of the time we let spikes walk but this looks older.

Thanks again. Think he will ever be anything but a spike? Because most of the time we let spikes walk but this looks older. You've got to remember that we've experienced 2 years of well above average rainfall and range conditions in almost every corner of the state, so deer are healthy and are often looking older than they really are. Given another few years, I bet this spike could be a pretty nice deer. He may not ever be one of the best bucks in his age class, but that doesn't mean he can't still be a respectable buck.

And that's why I asked, thanks, I don't think we have had a spike get this old and not branch out. We weren't really thinking of shooting this one. Just was wondering. Thanks guys.

Skinny little doe neck, no butt, no breast, milk around his mouth...still a baby. I'd give him a pass.

So where I hunt we would take him out just because we have many others that are better suited to grow bigger and faster.
They make ammo specifically for hunting for a reason!

Three year old spikes very rarely happen. Once a spike always a spike is something the old timers believed. Almost never the case.

Glad I could get a healthy debate going. While I don't really think he's 3, I don't think he's a yearling either but it's hard to base off one pic sometimes. I know we had a three year old spike at one time that I let walk for some reason but he got killed I'm sure. I've only ever killed one spike and it was on a MLD place in late Jan; I shot him and one of his spikes fell off.

Like I said, we don't shoot spikes. So far they have grown. Its just that this one looked older.

We have a bunch like him this year, never have had as many young ones as we do now. I believe he is young for sure.
