I am looking for recommendations for a book or dvd set for training a Lab for duck retrieving. First and ultimate goal is a good family dog that is well behaved. If I can train some for duck hunting that is cherry on top. I raised an Australian Shepherd that I had to put down a couple years ago and he was a breeze to obedience train. Looking to get a good handle on the Lab and then see if I can introduce to ducks. Thanks for your recommendations.

Plenty of good options. Evan Graham, Bill Hillman, Dennis Voigt, Mike Lardy are just a few

I second Bill Hillmann's puppy DVD. That's the best that I've found up to this point.

Your best option is to hook up with a pro and throw birds for them. Learn alot more that way. Then the dvds make more sense.

Hillmann's Training A Retriever Puppy and then either continue with his system or switch to Lardy's TRT2.

Look at Richard Wolters book's. There are 6 or 7 and you can select the ones you want to train your dog how you'd like. Hope it all goes well!

In my experience, solid OB is the basis for any good duck dog. Solid OB just happens to produce a well behaved family dog as well. Retriever training will result in a good family dog by default simply from solid OB.
For videos, I'll throw Chris Akin's Duck Dog Basics I & II into the hat. His methods are simple, they work, and he explains them very well. My dogs responded well to the training methods he taught in the videos.
I've heard good things about Hillmann's & Lardy's stuff as well.
I personally did not like Dokken... his book or DVD.

I've got Evan Grahams Smartworks System Basics on DVDs with the Bonus puppy DVD as well as the Smartworks for retreivers Volume 1 & 2 along with the smartfetch book that I'm no longer using. Ended up using a Pro as I had to move to an apartment for a few months so didn't get to do my own training through the basics. http://www.gundogsupply.com/smartwork-dvd-set.htmlhttp://www.gundogsupply.com/smartfetch-3-book-set.htmlMine books are bound separately but same as in the link above. Would sell everything for $160 shipped if you're do go the Evan Graham route and want to save a few $. They are in almost perfect condition. Never took them into the field, etc.
