I was driving home Sunday morning when between Sheffield and the Pecos River, it appeared that someone was kicking up dust ahead of me. That was strange because all of the roads were still wet from recent rains. As I approached the dust, I realized what was happening, the cedars were exploding, releasing dense clouds of yellow pollen. Immediately, my eyes started burning and nose started running. I have seen this occur on a couple of other occasions but on Sunday, it was confined to a very small area. I am sure there is someone on here who can tell us what triggers the cedars to release their pollen in this fashion. Also, is it only the red berry cedar that does this or does the blue berry do it as well??? Adios, Gary

A guy at work told me he saw one do the same thing last weekend in Weatherford. He said it looked like smoke. My kid's allergies can confirm this is happening.

When I lived in Austin we would see those huge clouds come across the fairways at the golf club and immediately all eyes teared and noses hit the running trail - I believe it was a shot of wind that was the trigger

The blues and reds will hammer you this time of year. I am very lucky not to be allergic to them.

the male redberry juniper typically flowers & pollinates during late summer through mid fall. The male Ashe (blueberry) juniper flowers and pollinates between December and February. The female of these two have the fruit (berry). I have lived this my entire life as I am very allergic to both of these species pollen. This should be the tail end of redberry and the beginning of the Ashe (blueberry) pollination season, sometimes they over lap during November ... ugh!

Have heard on Ashe junipers that the red berries is the male and there the ones that that explode. On the lake some times it looks like the hills are on fire.

Every year in October the Mountain Cedars on our lease will do the same thing. One day there will be nothing at all and the next day it will look like a 5K acre wild fire the pollen is so thick.

Was sitting in my blind one quiet afternoon a few years ago when that happened. My first thought was that someone was poaching on my place and lit up a cigar out of sight of me, not knowing I was in the blind.
Me and ol' RUGER, 74 years and still shooting.

You on the other hand are scared of shrubs and a whole list of miniscule critters. I don't even think trex has the emotional/physical weaknesses you have.
