I don't gut them anymore. I hang them head down, skin and debone them.

Gut it where it falls. Sooner ya get it out the better and it just takes 3-5 minutes. This or drag off in the brush a few feet. I carry all my tools/gear for gutting a bag. I have knives, gut hooks, looping shears, gloves, etc all in one kit. It does not take any time to gut a deer if you have the right gear. I gutted a buck this morning in 3-4 minutes max taking my time.

There is no right or wrong way. I never gut anymore. For me it is an unnecessary and sometimes messy extra step. I do it like 603country and just cut the flanks down enough to easily remove the tenders without gutting.

When I gut a deer I start by cutting the hocks to hang the deer later. I have the deer on its back and then start at the pelvis by cutting thru the hide/meat to the bone. I cut a small slit into the cavity where the intestine are at. I use the gut hook to cut from the pelvic bone all the way up to the brisket or all the way to neck(if a doe). I take the lopping shears and cut the "H" bone. Then put one of my feet on the deers hind legs to hold them down. I grab the tail and pull upward to break the pelvic bone to open up the area to remove the guts.If it is a doe I then take my knife and rip open the ribcage to the brisket. I take my knife and cut the diaphragm in between vitals and abdominal cavity. I reach in a grab the windpipe/juggler vein above the heart and cut it with the knife. I then pull and cut the whole vitals/guts out thru the pelvic bone. It took me longer to write this than it takes to gut a deer for me. I used to gut a doe in about 60 seconds when I was doing 4-10 at time a few years back. The right tools/equipment and you can gut a deer in short order.

LO wants us to bring back and hang to gut. But on the bright side, there's usually someone there that wants to "help" (aka they know better) and pretty much do it for you.

Agreed. Watch someone who knows what they are doing. Also, being good with a knife helps, kills me to watch people cut down through the hair....always cut from flesh side out through the hair! I don't split the pelvic, instead I cut around the butt while and when ya remove the rest it will pull through and your done.

Everything works good if two things don't happen. The deer isn't gut shot or you don't punch a hole in its stomach and secondly you don't bust the pee bag. I've tried all methods around that pelvic bone and finally carry the "small" rechargeable black and decker jig saw in my bag. It works great! I put my fingers in the pelvic hole to protect the bag, make a center cut, open up the bone, make two more cuts on each side and the bag lift right out. Cuts are easy and save knives.

I'm with therancher. After decades of skinning and gutting deer - hundreds of them - I finally asked myself "why gut them"? Now I just skin em, take the backstrap off, debone the hindquarters, and remove the shoulders. The guts remain perfectly packaged. I don't use the ribs.
I gut the pigs, because I want the ribs.

After watching guys fiddle around gutting a deer and acting like it was some overbearing task, I was about to have a fit. I could believe it was taking them so long. Then my daughter showed up with a doe. I told them all you have to do is remove the parts you do not want, and don't cut open anything that you don't want to smell. Then I started in on my daughters doe, I had to stop mid-way and scoot the trashcan under the deer. I did not know that my daughter was timing me. 1:13. It only takes a little over a minute. That was with the pelvic area removed and gutted all of the way to the jaw. I only used a Havalon long bladed knife for the entire operation. Gut hooks are over rated. It is a really simple process. I generally fart around and spend about 2-3 minutes anymore. Pigs I generally do not gut, but deer we dry age whole for 2-3 weeks in a walk-in cooler.

I don't gut them anymore. I hang them head down, skin and debone them. ^^^^^^THIS^^^^^^^ Just let the guts stay in the chest. Mush easier and not near as bloody or messy.

I really like the heart and liver, not to mention the tenderloins. I just field dress the standard way where they drop and keep a jumbo zip-lock in my pack for the organs. Deer ribs and skirt are really good too.
Y'all are missing out on some of the best parts leaving the gut intact.

I always take it to camps, gut it with my pocket knife with deer on his or her back. I never gut them where they fall, I want as little smell of death around the feeder as possible.
